Deftones Deliver What People Want by Not Caring What People Want

tumblr_n3rs3ntjNg1qiy0bto1_500There aren’t many old-timers in the heavy metal world, but if you were to put together a list of them, the Deftones would definitely be right at the top. The alt metal band has consistently delivered chart-topping hits for 28 years, with no end in sight. Their brand of metal, blending head-banging noise with soaring sounds, broke the mold when they first debuted, and has since become a signature sound for the alt heavy metal scene. Fuse.tv refers to their sound as “soundscapes you can mosh to,” which comes as close to describing the sensation as anything else you’ll see anywhere.

A New Album for the Deftones

As the band gets set to release their latest album – Gore, scheduled for release on April 8 – and gears up to kick off another summer of touring, they’ve also taken the time to launch a media publicity blitz. In the past month, they’ve managed to land on the covers of at least two major music industry publications and chatted with just about everyone who’s anyone in the world of heavy metal. What’s emerged is a picture of a band that’s digging deeper and flying higher as they expand their personal soundscapes.

The Bank That Cares About You

So how is it that the Deftones keep delivering the sounds that people want? According to keyboardist Frank Delgado, they do it by not caring what people expect or want.

“We don’t go into a record thinking we have to do something a certain way,” he told a reporter for Fuse.tv. “The reason our records are so dynamic with these highs and lows, the heavy and soft…is that’s just the emotions that come from being in a room with five guys for any amount of time.”

Nothing could make the highs and lows, heave and soft dichotomy clearer than the contrast between the two singles released to date from Gore – the heady, psychedelic “Prayers/Triangles” and the primal, metallic crash of “Doomed User,” which premiered two weeks ago on Sirius XM.

Intentional or not, the end result is a sound that no one else can quite capture, which is one of the reasons that Deftones tickets sell out like hotcakes the moment they go on sale, and has keep the Deftones relevant in a shifting music scape that sees bands come and go like tissue paper. Since hitting the scene in 1995 with Platinum-seller, “Adrenaline,” the Deftones have racked up a Grammy, two platinum and two gold records.

The Detone Tour Dates

The band has just released a new round of tour dates for this summer, filling in an already crowded tour schedule. Originally, the band had released a handful of March dates, mostly in Texas, followed up by a heavy May schedule spent touring the South and the Midwest. In June, the band heads overseas for a month in Europe, their first European dates since they narrowly escaped a terrorist attack at the Bataclan theater in Paris last fall.

The latest dates include a handful of shows with Refused in August, which bulk up the Deftones dates already released for May and August. In addition, the Deftones will be appearing at several music festivals, including Carolina Rebellion in North Carolina and the Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta.
