Kenny Rogers rocked the entertainment world recently when he announced that he would retire this year. Rogers, who is now 78, says he plans to spend more time with his wife and their twin boys. “I’ve done everything I set out to do,” he said in an interview. “Every goal I’ve set, I’ve done that, and there’s a point where you have to say, ‘I’ve had my turn. Let someone else have it,’ and that’s kind of where I am.”
Rogers hasn’t been secretive about the fact that he wasn’t able to spend a lot of time with his older children as they were growing up because of his career, and he doesn’t want to make that same mistake with his 12 year old twin boys. “My boys are playing football this year, and we went to watch a game and they were so excited about us being there, and that’s the kind of thing that as a parent you want to be part of as much as you can,” he said.
And although he’s been in the spotlight for all these 60 years, he feels like he’s doing the right thing. “I thought it was going to be easy because I’m so tired and it’s not as easy for me to get around,” he said. “I’m not as mobile as I used to be.” In response to this, he changed the show and now it’s about an hour and a half with a chronological look at his life, including all of his music.
But as you would expect, the superstar isn’t planning on going out quietly. His last tour ended in April, but Rogers has another event up his sleeve: a duet with Dolly Parton.
Rogers Pairs Up with Dolly Parton One More Time
Kenny Rogers has long been thought of as the perfect duet partner for Dolly Parton. The two began working together in 1983 and as a result of that collaboration, they had the run away hit piece “Islands in the Stream.” The musical piece became a number one hit on the charts.
When asked about Parton and their upcoming duet, Rogers said “We’ve enjoyed a special friendship for decades, and I’ll forever look back fondly on the many collaborations, performances, and laughs we’ve shared as the some of the most extraordinary moments of my career. I know it will be a moving experience for us standing on that stage together for one last time.”
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are scheduled to perform together in Nashville, Tennessee this October 25th. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the two together one last time, so if you want to attend this show, don’t put off buying your tickets because once they’re gone, you’ll never have the chance to see them together again.
They will of course sing “Islands in the Stream, the duet that started it all, but Rogers will also be joined by others on his Farewell Concert Celebration. The acts lined up include Jamey Johnson, Elle King, Alison Krauss, Little Big Town, Idina Menzel, and the Flaming Lips.
Rogers has been thinking a lot about his decision to retire, and sums it up this way, It’s one of those things,” he says. “You make decisions based on what life gives you. I’ve had a great life, I can’t complain, but it’s time for me to hang it up, I think.”
And Parton has weighed in on the upcoming performance as well. “Performing with Kenny for the last time ever on October 25th is going to be emotional for both of us, but it’s also going to be very special. Even though Kenny may be retiring, as he fades from the stage, our love for each other will never fade away.”
