Henley Takes A New Direction On His New Album
Henley takes to the road again after a two-year long Eagles Farewell tour that sold out shows in stadiums across the country. His new album is a departure from the singer-songwriter’s usual style, featuring a decidedly country edge with a SoCal edge. The 67-year-old singer told Rolling Stone magazine earlier this month that most people associate him with California because he played with “that other band,” but that this latest album is both a return to his roots and a natural progression.
“It’s not me trying to do a Don Henley country album,” he told the magazine. “It’s who I am and where I come from.”
And he honors his Southern country heritage with pride on Cass Country, which features duets with country superstars that include Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard – and Mick Jagger, who joins in with Lambert and Henley on “Bramble Rose.” Henley sought out singers whose voices motivate him, he says, who are “real singers” that “get the job done.”
The Album Took Five Years to Create
That description could just as easily be applied to Henley himself. While the singer has not released a solo album in 15 years, he has toured steadily, both solo and with the Eagles, since the band’s reunion in 1994, and has played on the band’s recent studio release. In the meantime, he’s been quietly working on Cass County in the background, writing and recording songs for the album in the down time between other projects.
The album has been five years in the making, and is produced by Stan Lynch, the former drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Recording in Nashville also gave Henley a chance to tuck into the kind of “heart-attack” food he grew up on, he says, and he enjoyed getting back into the studio on a solo project. He enjoyed it so much, in fact, that he’s already compiling material for another new album, writing a little bit every day and, he hopes, doing some of his best work ever.
