How the New Ray LaMontagne Album Came to Him in a Dream

raybioRay LaMontagne tickets went on sale to the general public last Friday, timed to coincide with the release of LaMontagne’s sixth studio album, “Ouroboros.” Released just two years after his last album debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Top 200, “Ouroboros” is raising eyebrows and praise all over the music world. Not only is it a departure from “his usual style” – which is really saying something for a singer whose usual style is to depart from his usual style – it’s also an inspired work, and not just in musical terms.

LaMontagne Announces His Album in an Unusal Way

LaMontagne introduced the first single of “Ouroboros” with a relatively low-key note to fans – but it contained a bit of a bombshell revelation. The message, delivered on a postcard, began,

“Ladies and Gentleman,

I would like to extend to you this humble invitation: to be among a select few of my listening audience to hear a passage from my latest composition titled ‘Ouroboros’.

‘Ouroboros’ is an album musically unlike any I have recorded previously. It did not make itself known to me in sections, sessions, or moments carved out of the clutter of every day life. It presented itself as the simple question:

“Will you follow me?”

Of course I couldn’t say no. I had to follow. What else could I do?”

Since his January 21 announcement, LaMontagne has elaborated on his original message in a number of interviews with music industry publications. The story goes something like this:

After the last LaMontagne tour, Ray was excited to move forward and produce a new work, but as he sifted through the material left after his last album, he just couldn’t seem to find the cohesiveness and vision he wanted to put forth. He struggled with it for several weeks, never quite getting it to coalesce. One night, he fell asleep with the album on his mind, and found himself taken on a fully imagined, complete musical journey that he knew was precisely the sound and vision he’d been seeking. He woke with it still fresh and complete in his mind and immediately set about trying to manifest that dream.

LaMontagne Does a 180 with His Music Style

The album “Ouroboros” is the physical and auditory manifestation of LaMontagne’s dream – a fully fleshed vision full of lush sounds. He incorporated the instruments of the psychedelic 70s into the score – Moog synthesizer and Melotron included – and layered it with unforgettable guitar, drum and keyboard riffs that blend into a work that critics have called “meditation” and “soothing therapy.” LaMontagne himself refers to the complete album as a “spiritual journey,” and invites listeners to follow its path with him.

LaMontagne is passionate about this new album even though he recognizes that it may present a “challenge” to some listeners. Like Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Ouroboros” is a concept album, and one that’s best absorbed, he feels, in listening to it from start to finish in one sitting. That, he understands, isn’t the way most music fans listen to music these days, but he’s hoping that they’ll take the leap of faith and make that journey with him on this album.

What will be interesting is to see how that reasoning shapes this summer’s Ray LaMontagne tour. LaMontagne acknowledges that fans expect artists to essentially get frozen in time, and certainly must recognize that audiences will want to hear their old favorites. Will he play what they want, or will he take them on a tour of the lush imaginary world of “Ouroboros?”

The only way to find out if the Ouroboros tour will be as inspired as the album will be to get Ray LaMontagne tickets now, and see where the journey takes you.
