Tool Is Touring – And Hinting at Fifth Album… Again

tool-band-picture1Progressive rock icons Tool are hitting stages across the South in January, and fans are thrilled to pieces. The band only played one show in 2015, and toured for a month in 2014. Before that, the band hadn’t toured together since 2010 – and there hasn’t been a major Tool concert tour since the 2006-2007 10,000 Days World Tour. That’s a long time for fans to wait between tours.

Of course, Tool fans have been waiting just as long for another album release from rockers. Their last release, the 2006 10,000 Days, entered the US Billboard 200 in the number one position, and sold nearly 564,000 US copies during its first week. The album sold nearly 3 million copies worldwide in the year after its release, but was certified Platinum in the U.S. much earlier than that – just about six weeks after its April release. Three singles from 10,000 Days – Vicarious, The Pot and Jambi – charted in 2006 and 2007, with all three peaking in the Top 10 on various charts, and two charting in the Billboard Hot 100. The album also won a 2007 Grammy for Best Recording Package, awarded to guitarist Adam Jones.

Teasing the Fifth Tool Album

It’s not as if the metal band hasn’t wanted to release more recordings, Jones explained in a widely covered interview with Rolling Stone magazine last year. In fact, their creative energies were being sapped from a couple of different directions, including a complicated series of lawsuits that involved a friend, an insurance company and some artwork. The suit, originally filed in 2007, was finally settled this past July, and since then, Jones says, the new album is full steam ahead. The award-winning guitarist recently said that at least one piece for the new album is finished, and 10 others are “in the works.”

At the same time, Jones revealed, one of the band members – he declined to say which one out of respect for that member’s privacy – has been dealing with a serious, “do-or-die” illness that has kept the band from recording.

Tool on Tour

All that must have seemed far away from Tempe, Arizona this past Halloween, when Tool took the stage at the Arizona Monster Mash Concert, along with, among others, long-time mutual fans, Primus. The two bands have collaborated on shows before, but never on an actual tour. In an odd twist of fate, Jones ended up seated next to one of the Primus members on the plane going home from the October concert. The two got to talking, and agreed that they should team up and tour together.

Jones got home to discover that the agents for the two bands were already discussing a joint tour, and the January Tool-Primus tour was announced to the world just two weeks later.

The tour starts January 9 in San Diego, and takes a swing through the south before ending with a January 31 show in Louisiana. As should be expected – this is Tool, after all! – Tool concert tickets are selling like crazy, with just a few handfuls of tickets left at each of the venues (and they’re not playing dinner theaters, here!). If you haven’t got your Tool tickets, you’d better get on it fast. Tool fans have been waiting years for a chance to see the band live again, and they’re not waiting any longer.
