Tragedy Hits The Tragically Hip, But the Band is Dedicated to its Fans

220px-The_Tragically_Hip_EP.bmpUnthinkable tragedy has hit Canada’s iconic band, The Tragically Hip, but the band’s reaction has endeared them even more to its fans. Gord Downie, who is the lead singer for the band, has been diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer. The singer, who is only 52, has announced that he won’t let the diagnoses stop him from touring his summer with the band. Determined to go on in support of the band’s upcoming album, Man Machine Poem, which is scheduled to be released June 17, he approached his doctor for permission to tour. The doctor cleared him, but is insisting that the singer is closely monitored while on tour to prevent exhaustion and to watch for other issues that could crop up.

Get The Tragically Hip Tickets While You Can!

Fans are in a frenzy to ensure they get The Tragically Hip tickets for fear that it may be the bands last tour. The summer tour kicks off on July 22 in Victoria, British Columbia and end on August 20 in Kingston, Ontario.

The Band Responds to the Overwhelming Demand

As soon as tickets went on sale this past Monday, they were sold out within minutes. And fans, who are desperate to see what might be the band’s final tour, went crazy. They began a campaign aimed at CBC asking them to broadcast the performance for the public.  And it’s no wonder, The Tragically Hip is considered iconic in the eyes of Canadians. For example, Peter Mansbridge referred to the band as “The musical chroniclers of our times.” And one overzealous fan posted an impassioned plea on his Facebook page that read in part, “The Hip have had a defining influence on our country, and for so many of us, are core to our identity as Canadians.”

Promoters responded to fans by adding 4 dates to the tour. They didn’t add any more cities, but added additional dates for the cities the band is already scheduled in. The additional shows will take place in Vancouver on July 26, Edmonton on July 30, Calgary on August 3, and Toronto on August 14.

The Band’s Accomplishments

The band’s first album, Up to Here, was released in 1989, and although it had 4 hit singles, it wasn’t until they released Day for Night in 1994 that they started to gain momentum. That album produces 6 singles, including Grace, Too and Nautical Disaster. Then, the group made an appearance on Saturday Night Live after fellow Canadian Dan Aykroyd, pulled some strings and it’s been nothing but success for the band since then.

The band is known for their enigmatic and dark sound that is all its own. The unique sound has been attributed to Downie’s minimalistic sounds, and fans from all over the world are already mourning to certain loss of the blues-tinged musician.
