The Artist With No Major Record Label

Most artists who achieve fame do so because they have a major record label backing them and that label can help get the word out about the music. But Mac Miller didn’t go that route. Instead, he signed with Rostrum Records, which is a small Indie label, and set about writing and preforming music that speaks to teenagers and college aged kids.

That’s why it was a huge surprise when his debut album, “Blue Slide Park” went platinum. And not only did he sell tons of records, but he also landed on the number one spot of Billboard 200. All without a major record label backing him. This shot to stardom happened at a neck break speed of six years—something virtually unheard of in the music industry.

Back to the Beginning

Mac Miller was born as Malcolm James McCormick in 1992, and has since gone by several stage names. The most well-known of course is Mac Miller, but the singer has also performed under the names Larry Lovestein, Delusional Thomas, and The Velvet Revival. At age fourteen, he discovered rap and then at fifteen, got serious about a career. He says that he gave up parties and sports at that age in order to concentrate on his career. He taught himself to play the guitar, drums, bass and the piano. He released his first album, “By My Mackn’ Ain’t Easy” at the age of fifteen, and then three years later, signed with the Indie label Rostrum Records.

Next, Miller released his debut album under the Indie label called, “Blue Slide Park,” which propelled him to stardom.

Mac Miller Today

In 2014, Miller announced that he would no longer record under Rostrum Records and instead started his own label, REMember Music, which is in remembrance of close friend of his who died. Then shortly afterwards, he signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records for $10 million.
