A Lot Like Birds Reviews

5.0 (based on 7 reviews)

It begins with the soft chimes that you often hear once you've rang a doorbell. Friendly? In some ways. Inviting? Only for so long. To call it a home would be misleading, a haunting and entrancing would be more sufficient descriptors of the house A Lot Like Birds have imagined for their follow up to 2011's Conversation Piece...

A Lot Like Birds are a technically gifted band; whether or not they're doing a good job of harnessing their gifts is another thing entirely. Kurt Travis being on vocals once again is certainly appealing, too; while he had a decent run with Dance Gavin Dance, it was apparent that he might be a better fit elsewhere and not long after leaving DGD, he joined ALLB for 2011's Conversation Piece...

Between the bongos and synthesized sine waves, amidst the pummeling percussion and atmospheric torrent that rains down on , it becomes clear-- this is the most composed A Lot Like Birds has ever been. On first impression, it appears the post-hardcore troupe is exhausting each and every bell and whistle to make its third album appear as dynamic as it can. It's also true that will drastically change the group's fanbase because of the record's sheer ambition...

On A Lot Like Birds' second album, the Sacramento, California, six-piece have taken the everything-goes approach they used on their debut, Conversation Piece, and worked meticulously to carefully rein it in--almost had you there. Nope, the band are still a maelstrom of screechy vocals and kinetic riffing one minute, and then an epic, noodling prog band the next...

Sound: I want to start this review off by saying that this is an overall great album for anyone who likes the more "experimental" side of Post-hardcore with a pinch of post-rock. The album is like if you threw The Fall Of Troy's doppelganger and in the unlikely event with the self titled Dance Gavin Dance album and a hint of Irepress and Explosions In The Sky...

Release Date: October 11th, 2011 For a relatively small band, A Lot Like Birds has definitely been generating buzz lately, and for good reason. With, now, two full lengths out, a recent signing to Doghouse Records, and a headliner under their belt, "hard working" and "ambitious" can safely be considered understatements when describing the progressive Sacramento band. But something is quite different about their newest full length, Conversation Piece. Quite different...

It was only a matter time before the prog-emo stylings of Coheed And Cambria met the screamo scene. Singers Kurt Travis (ex-Dance Gavin Dance) and Cory Lockwood use too much of the "balls-in-vice" method of screaming, which generally results in too much caterwauling, especially on the more hyperactive numbers like "THINK DIRTY OUT LOUD." It distracts mightily from what are some damn fine prog chops from the rest of this Sacramento, California, band...
