Alestorm Reviews

Sound: "Back Through Time" is the 3rd album by the band Alestorm. As many will know, the band is based around pirate-themed lyrics and happy sing-along power metal. This album fits neatly into the image the band created for itself with its last two albums: piraty powermetal, with lyrics about booze and epic quests. No surprise, but surely a lot of fun! The songs all have a cheery vibe, a catchy chorus and a cool solo section...

Sound: "True Scottish Pirate Metal" is what they advertise, and they do not disappoint. Alestorm's debut release "Captain Morgan's Revenge" has created the genre of Pirate Metal in all it's glory. They are truly one of a kind. The style, even though labeled as Pirate Metal, could closely be related to Power Metal, or even Folk Metal at times. The sound itself is crisp and melodic. This album was produced very well. The guitars all have a very bright tone that is accented perfectly by the keys...

"Believe me, if the music doesn't convince you that Alestorm's members actually are pirates, then vocalist Christopher Bowes will definitely fool you into believing that actor Geoffrey Rush is also a singer." When I was just a wee young metalhead (so long ago) the one thing that drew me to metal was just how fun it can be. There was always a special place in my heart for bands that were either too awful (remember N-M-E...

3/5 The title track of the third full-length album by Scotland's kings of swashbuckling folk metal poses the ridiculous premise that pirates trump Vikings (any metalhead knows otherwise). The rest of Back Through Time isn't much less absurd. An entertaining, if repetitive, collection of power-shanties, it's ready to please anyone with brine on the brain...

Yo ho, you scurvy dogs! The brigands and bastards of Alestorm set sail once more on the seas of pirate power metal with their third release Back Through Time. Expect more tales of sea battles, shipwrecks, midget and wenches and, of course, the swilling of gallons of ale and rum from this lot of Scottish buccaneers...

This review is the second in a four part series of recent releases off the Napalm/SPV label. With the buzz around Pirates Of The Caribbean still fresh in everyone's mind last year the timing of Alestorm's first album Captain Morgan's Revenge was pretty much bang on the money with a good reception both commercially and critically in metal circles. The question was with this 2nd album being released only a year later along with line up changes could this trend continue...

Sound: What is more fun that pirate-themed power metal? Absolutely nothing! On Black Sails at Midnight, Alestorm mug it up, employing soaring keyboards, noodly, galloping power riffs and of course, lyrics about high seas pursuits. Taking sonic cues from DragonForce and Hammerfall, Alestorm put the fun back in melodic metal without sacrificing speed or sonic integrity, which is no easy task...

"I've never heard a collection of songs that are so perfect for the band's already stellar live shows." Beer soaked and battered from the epic battle with the Terrorsquid, Captain Bowes and his merry band of Scottish pirates were able to proceed further northbound. The quest for gold and desire for plundering alcohol was too strong, especially in these days when the golden age of piracy was nearing its end...
