Alt-J Reviews

Unlike the majority An Awesome Wave, Buffalo is a lot more melancholy and has certainly been quietened to allow the duet of vocals to flourish. The drum beat is very sporadic in the introduction before the vocals are allowed to take control. The feelings you get from Buffalo are soft and controlled before a brief moment of eccentric just over half way through the song. This leads up to the chorus with ?Buffalo? being repeated in many different forms ever so gently...

The A.V. Club reviews a lot of records every week, but some things still slip through the cracks. Stuff We Missed looks back at notable releases from this year that we didn't review at their time of release. Alt-J is the winner of this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize, the latest holder of the "new Radiohead" moniker, and currently surfing high on a set of hyperbolic press...

You suppose you've been standing on that fulcrum for a long time now. It is the one where bizarre pop bands sell out many-thousand seat venues, the one where "indie rock" has ceased to mean anything other than most nebulous vagary of a style, the one where Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem separately sold out Madison Square Garden in the same six-month period...

"Triangles are my favorite shape/three points where two lines meet," guitarist Joe Newman sings in "Tessellate," offering up one explanation into why this Cambridgeshire, U.K. band would name themselves after the Mac keyboard shortcut that produces a triangle shape. An Awesome Wave, Alt-J's debut record of offbeat love songs and weird odes to geometry, has already become a surprise hit in their native country. The 13 tracks here don't easily fit into popular categories...

It is difficult to mildly praise a British band. Either they don't command much public attention, or they are the saviors of their genre and poised to cross the Atlantic and take over--quick, tell Paul Revere. The Beatles set a precedent for hysteria over admiration. It was the Beatles and the Stones, and then Oasis and the Stone Roses, and then the Arctic Monkeys--these boyish men in the right jeans with the right sound. Oh, and Radiohead, though the frenzy they created was a bit more.....

There's been a lot said about alt-j, those Mac-generated triangles, and most of it has been a struggle pit their sound to a genre. The band has given a helping hand by offering up a couple of labels, should you feel comfortable using them: 'jump-folk' or 'trip-folk', but if you find the labelling process a bit of a waste of time, best just to give them a listen...

This British band debuts with an impressive album blending elements of folk-pop, dubstep, electro-pop and much more into quirky leftfield pop gems, with imaginative, intricate arrangements featuring a variety of instrumentation, skittering rhythms, elastic lead vocals, gorgeous harmonies and brainy lyrics.

If this weren't such an earnest, quality album, it might be easy to dismiss Alt-J for their youthful pretentiousness. Aside from the name - and the keyboard-shortcut moniker has elicited surprisingly little cynicism - there are lyrics and allusions on 'An Awesome Wave' that will induce squirming. For instance, here songs are inspired by 'the pains and pangs of unrequited love' via 'Where The Wild Things Are', Hubert Selby Jr. and the death of a matador (?...

It's hard to place Alt-J. Originally from Leeds, they spend their time in a Cambridgeshire basement making their own brand of uniquely dubbed "folk-step". However, the noises that An Awesome Wave emits far escape the dull, dark depths such a creative location suggests. Instead, it's a stunning and encompassing affair of both innovative and electrifying musicianship and exemplary song writing. Comparing Alt-J to contemporary artists or listing their influences is almost pointless...
