Anthrax Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Of the bands that make up the "Big Four" of thrash, Anthrax undoubtedly seem to have struggled most, unsure whether to evolve from their thrash roots or remain a nostalgia act, without the financial safety net of the similarly unpredictable Metallica.

If Anthrax has any gimmick whatsoever, it's that they have always done the unexpected. However, after 32 years (and counting) as a band, the unexpected has become par for the course, yet, founding member and rhythm guitarist Scott Ian never misses an opportunity to point out that they are, once again, doing something he bets we didn't expect. Take their latest release, Anthems for example. This EP consists of covers of six classic 1970s rock songs that influenced the current lineup of the band...

"It's obvious that Anthrax had plenty of fun in recording these 'Anthems.' You'll have even more listening to them." The guys in Anthrax have never taken themselves too seriously -- especially when it comes to the EPs they're often dropping between albums. After all, wasn't the space between the furious thrashing on "Among The Living" and "State Of Euphoria" broken up by the enjoyably goofy "I'm The Man...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Fistful of Covers Anthrax is a group that needs little introduction, due in part to their status as one of the "Big Four" in thrash metal. It's a status that has surely been well earned, as their discography is filled with several landmark albums that have been highly influential to the music (not just metal) world. It goes without saying that Anthrax helped pioneer a fast-paced brand of metal that remains celebrated even to present day...

3.5/5 While thrashers Anthrax have written their fair share of headbanging classics, their biggest hits, at least on international radio, have been covers of songs by Public Enemy, Joe Jackson, and Trust. So recording a mostly covers EP (plus a remix of their own song "Crawl") makes perfect sense, and Anthrax do it with gusto on Anthems...

Sound: Wow! And from out of the blue came Anthrax! Anthrax were basically unknown before this cd. It turned out to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Anthrax's sound is that of long and complex intros to songs before it settles down to let the easy-flowing lyrics do their stuff. They have lots of nifty little riffs in each song, and no song sounds like another one. Everything is precise and polished until it shines. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are fantastic...

Sound: Here's what you get on this album. High pitched wails, some operatic attempts, fast guitar riffs, and harmonies. From the opening riff of Deathrider you know that you're getting hit with Anthrax's best. Since this album was released in '84, it was still pretty early for thrash metal releases. I think only Laaz Rockit, Slayer, and Metallica had out albums. So for a lot of people this sound was still brand new...

Sound: At a time when music was starting to take itself a little too seriously, Anthrax decided to break the mould, and write a comedy rap metal song. With the main riff coming from a Jewish folk piece (Scott Ian and Dan Spitz being Jewish), it sets a rather bizzare scene. Musically, it's one of their most simple songs, nothing majorly complicated about its structure, with simple drumming (rare from a drummer as skilled as Charlie Benante) and the simple aforementioned riff...

Sound: This album was released in the year 1985. It's also Anthrax's second album. The music on this album is great. The bass introduction for Lone Justice is awesome. The opening riffs to the track AIR are great also. I think this has to be one of the greatest thrash metal albums of all time. Another good song on this album would be The Enemy. Scott Ian and Dan Spitz are great guitarists. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics to this album is great also...
