At The Drive In Reviews

If you have any memories of modern rock radio in 2000, I'm guessing they aren't fond recollections. The dominance of rap-metal, as defined by Limp Bizkit and Korn, was starting to wane ever so slightly, and that had to be a good thing, right? But at its best, rap-metal at least offered something new...

Any term that's been applied to both Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance is clearly one over which there's little agreement. Alongside similarly bickered-over labels like 'post-hardcore', the 'emo' tag was also attached to At The Drive-In, though both band and fans remain quick to quell such unfashionable associations...

For a lot of people, particularly those in their mid to late twenties, and presumably a large portion of those that read this site, At The Drive-In are more than just a band. Relationship Of Command represents almost a year zero in terms of music taste and believing what was possible. At the time it seemed like ATDI burst into the conscience of the music press and general public from out of nowhere, a whirling dervish of hair, anger, throwing chairs and themselves around with little abandon...

It was nice to see these guys back at Coachella again. There was just as much heat as there was praise for this "reunion," .coupled with the unnecessary "Sparta versus Mars Volta" wars and arguments. No need to get into all that, because Vaya to me seems not that revolutionary, but still a class apart in the post-hardcore genre. "Rascuache" and "Ursa Minor" are really outstanding in showing the technical capacity of this band...

Sound: At The Drive-In are, to me at least, one of the most important bands that have come out. Their sound was unparalleled and can't be duplicated. The last album from this band had to my opinion the best sound. The riffs are intense and underrated more complex than one might think. Another thing this band does is encorporate bass lines that are just as important to the listening experience as the guitar and drums. Alot of bands today you cant even hear the bass...

Sound: Emo? Punk? Progressive? Disturbing? Melodic? Who cares? At The Drive-In's oxymoronic 'live studio album' hasn't disappointed a single indie-head, hard rocker or emo teen that I've ever played this album to, and I've played this album to many a friend of mine. Cedric Bixler-Zavala's angry tone when he shouts "Widows...

Thoughtheir feral, post-hardcore attack may draw comparisons to Kornand Rage Against the Machine, the Texas quintet At the Drive-In are farbrainier than their neo-metal contemporaries. Aided by RossRobinson's sleek production, the album Relationship of Command's 11 tracks swell withbarely contained rage and chilling quiet. At times ferociouslyintense, other times stirring, it never fails to excite.

Sound: At the Drive-In has a very unique sound, utilizing the tension/release technique in almost every song. Their sound could be described as Alternative/Grunge/Post-Hardcore. Most people call them Post-Hardcore but in my opinion they sound more Grunge than anything. Acrobatic Tenement was their first full length album, and also Omar Rodriguez Lopez played bass on this album, after the release of this album he becomes the lead guitar player...

A career-spanning anthology that looks at the little El Paso band that could have and should have changed the face of modern rock'n'roll. Succumbing to internal pressures, outsider expectations and life on the road (gruelling by anyone's standards), this disc revisits all aspects of ATDI's recorded output, from the full-lengths to the EPs and the 7-inches, throwing in videos, a discography and an EPK to boot...
