Beatsteaks Reviews

Bands who have achieved massive success in less fashionable climes seem to be approached with an unfair level of caution: the suspicion that they must be doing something wrong to not have made it in the UK earlier. German punk-rockers with reggae sympathies by reputation, Beatsteaks are multi-platinum stars and an awkward sell on paper here. On record, they're better described as straight-up pop-rock band with some raucous elements and slow jams sprinkled intermittently into the mix...

The Beatsteaks have been knocking about for ages now, memories of olde were relived with a hazy look in my eye, and the taste of Diamond White in my mouth. Berlin's four-piece (Arnim Teutoborg-Weiss, Peter Baumann, Bernd Kurtzke, Torsten Scholz, Thomas Götz) have been overlooked, they get lumped in with the Rancid and Pennywise's of this world (and their label) all too often, but as this album shows, there's more to these German punk's than first meets the ear.....

2 years after its release Beatsteaks' 'Limbo Messiah' has received its UK release. Whilst the Germans might not leave a distinctive impression, the record still manages to have some favourable moments, with the fiery opener'As I Please' being one of these. An quick blast of loose Alt-Rock leads into 'Jane Became Insane', a catchy number with distinctive "nah-nah-nah-nah" adding a slight poppy twist on the bands sound...

These days, it seems that deeming a group of musicians "a rock band" automatically lumps them into one of a handful of narrowly-defined categories. Today's "rock bands" seem to either be garage punk throwbacks (The Strokes), neo cock rockers and harbingers of bad boy attitude (Rye Coalition), kitschy power-popsters strung out on irony and '80s nostalgia (Ultimate Fakebook), or bandwagon-jumpers grasping for a measure of legitimacy (pick just about any emo-pop band)...

The first full-length album by Germany's Beatsteaks (following a self-released demo and a 1997 EP) was released on Epitaph in 2000, but it sounds as if the group's heart and soul lie in the immediate pre-grunge era; Launched would not sound out of place played amongst a bunch of mid-to-late-'80s releases on the SST label, plus maybe the first couple of Faith No More albums...

The Beatsteaks may have delivered some charged and energetic material in the past, but Living Targets comes barreling out of the gates from moment one and tries its damnedest to never let up. The material here has a sense of urgency that complements the fast-paced songs and enhances the slower material. Hard-rockers like "Let Me In" are played with a powerful grasp of melody and structure, adding a weight to the lyrics that is often missing from their contemporaries...
