Beck Reviews

It can be difficult to gain a balanced perspective on an album after reading a single summary of the music. Bias can tilt a review, as can personal taste, history and just about everything else that is unique to the person writing it. So in an effort to offer an expanded perspective in such a medium, here are three reactions, three impressions, three takes on Morning Phase by Beck...

The LA maverick invokes Anglophile folk on first new album in six years... "Turn, turn away/From the sound of your own voice," sings Beck towards the end of Morning Phase, his first new album in six years. Those lines serve as a pretty neat summary of his working methods during his hiatus, where he seemed to explore every possible musical avenue other than write and record an album of his own songs...

Capitol The music of Beck Hansen is very much like a choice bottle of basement wine in their abilities to get better with age. To my memory, there have been three of his albums that got me immediately: One Foot in the Grave, Odelay! and Mutations --the arguable holy trinity of his catalog which, since the release of his star-making kitchen sink slacker classic Mellow Gold (the singer's third if you count 1993's Golden Feelings and 1994's Stereopathetic Soulmanure, which you absolutely should)...

Morning Phase, Beck's 12th album, has been hailed as a sequel to his meditative 2002 milestone, Sea Change, a claim the singer-songwriter himself supports. And although the title suggests "mourning," Morning Phase evokes dawn and new beginnings more than endings. Yes, this slow and gentle work recalls Sea Change, but this time, Beck's sense of loss is tempered by sunshine, and Morning Phase feels as radiant as it does somber. "Can we start it all over again...

Despite all that's been written about Beck's eclecticism, his larger catalogue reveals an artist who's shifted between two speeds: quirky prankster pop and mellow psychedelic folk ballads. Morning Phase is firmly in the latter category and fits comfortably next to 2002's Sea Change and 1998's Mutations. Easy as it is to dismiss it as conservative necrophilia for the 70s singer/songwriter era, it also works as the gimmick-free antidote to the wackier tendencies on his postmodern pop albums...

I always hesitate to use the phrase 'return to form', because I worry it leaves those who enjoyed the supposed fallow period feeling like weirdos, sat in the dark rocking back and forth while R.E.M.s Up plays on a continuous loop. The "had it, lost it, got it back" narrative is always a fun one to write, but in Beck's case, I'd argue that he never really lost it in the first place...

Tweet Every Day Should Be Like Sunday There's something comforting about the ebb and flow of Beck Hanson. Since 1996's groundbreaking Odelay, he has ventured among and across various genres, creating a pattern that makes the next album predictable, yet not. After 2008's beat-heavy Modern Guilt, which followed 2006's dance-pop The Information, the assumption would be that the next release would be subdued, perhaps traveling back to the Sea Change era...

If 2005's Guero was the bastard child of Beck's seminal classic Odelay, then you'd be hard pressed not to admit that Beck's newest offering Morning Phase isn't the direct descendent of 2003's Sea Change. But while it's almost too easy to highlight the cyclic nature of Beck's career, the question remains; is the reclusive songwriter simply rehashing or genuinely reinventing...
