If you go to see a lot of shows, it's easy to get jaded. Most of the shows are good, but not great. You see bands phone in their performances. You see bands that have become lounge acts, caricatures of their former selves. Some bands seem to enjoy playing live about as much as the rest of us enjoy going to work (not much). Fortunately, once in a while a band will come along and restore your faith in the punk system...

Punk under-achievers Decca totally failed to recognise the potential of street punk pioneers Cock Sparrer - just as they overlooked the possibilities in Adam Ant, almost willing their small stable of young upstarts to lose. When two classic Sparrer singles, Runnin' Riot and a Stones cover, We Love You, failed to set the chart alight in 1977, Decca bizarrely chose to release the band's self-titled album solely in Spain, and the Sparrer split soon after...

Thirty years on and Cock Sparrer is still exactly what you'd want them to be. Exploding out of the speakers with all the energy and anger of bands one-third their age, but with the experience to know that you need more than that to survive, Here We Stand is defiantly first-wave punk, but shot through with the kind of balls that actually make you glad it's 2008...

Live: Runnin' Riot Across the USA is a pleasant look at a band at the peak of their comeback tour, playing energetic tunes for a buzzing audience. Half of the material is clear and nearly perfectly mixed in a club in San Francisco, while the other half of the record was sort of blah, coming from the legendary CBGB in New York City. Cock Sparrer still puts together a surprisingly good show, and their frontman, Colin McFaull, can still sing with sizzle and flair...
