Deadmau5 Reviews

The reason you gotta love Deadmau5 is that he makes it so easy to hate him. To thumb through the yearbook of 2014 EDM stars is to be overwhelmed by the visages of shiny happy people. Who's chiseling these guys' features, Michelangelo? Martin Garrix, Avicii, Hardwell, Calvin Harris, Kaskade, David Guetta, Afrojack -- it's like a Florentine sculpture garden drenched in hair gel. Then there's Skrillex, who thankfully looks like a '70s feminist who stuck a fork in an electrical socket...

Considering how dire a lot of superstar EDM releases have been in the last year, deadmau5 enters the fray with the advantage of deeply diminished expectations. His latest, while (1<2), comfortably clears the bar set by his contemporaries, and that would be impressive if the bar wasn't buried underground. Twenty-five tracks spread over two full-length mixes, the album doesn't lack for ambition, touching on classic electronica, alternative, and indie rock...

For his seventh album, Deadmau5 has turned from an electro-house polymath into the world's most unnecessary Nine Inch Nails tribute act. With a running time longer than the new X-Men movie, the two-disc While(1<2) gives Mau5 plenty of room to spiral downward into many of Trent Reznor's favorite tricks - the moody minor-key melodies, the Erik Satie-derived piano miniatures, the flickering static and machine fuzz, the bent and tortured notes, the plodding chug on acoustic guitar...

EDM ("Electronic Dance Music", if you fancy it full fat) has never had it so good, at least in North America. Whilst the rest of the world has been enjoying the genre's delights over the last couple of decades or so, it's only just recently grabbed the attention of music fans on the other side of the Atlantic. Blame Skrillex and David Guetta, both now worldwide stars with a little help of American love...

By all accounts, Deadmau5 was a highlight of last years Wireless festival, playing before Fatboy Slim and to a crowd that was no doubt in the right frame of mind for his housey-electro bangers. This album is a compilation of sorts, bringing together a number of club hits and collaborations with Melleefresh, who also happens to be the owner of Play Records, one of Canada's leading labels for this sort of thing...

Available on: mau5trap LP I'm sorry to be predictable. And given that you're a FACT reader it can be assumed that I'm preaching to the converted here. But some things are worth repeating. Because this isn't just some harmless spate of Eurotrash singles in the mid-90s vein - already half way returned to whatever sinkhole they crawled from, and leaving not so much as a scratch on the cultural landscape. Otherwise I wouldn't bother...

Hello readers! If you made it to this page, then congratulations and welcome to this review of Deadmau5's record Album Title Goes Here. Obviously you managed to sidestep any sudden outages that the servers at PopMatters must have suffered at the moment this went live. That in itself is great news considering the support staff are currently preoccupied with swimming in the pools of cash resulting from the veritable storm of click-throughs and ad revenue. Facebook and Twitter are ghost towns...

He's a divisive sort, deadmau5. That's okay, many of music's most interesting characters are. But it's notable that he - he being 31-year-old Toronto EDM producer Joel Zimmerman - seems to thrive off putting noses out of joint...

Dynamic but derivative ... Deadmau5 The first single taken from Deadmau5's sixth album was called The Veldt. It features Chris James, a vocalist the Canadian producer discovered via the internet, beatifically cooing about a "happy life with the machines ... the world the children made ... look at us now, so in love with the way we are"...
