Death Cab for Cutie Reviews

I don't know if anyone aside from Death Cab for Cutie completists was really demanding a deluxe reissue of Transatlanticism, but here we are with one anyway, having entered the era in which nearly every record gets a reissue for every milestone. Transatlanticism was warmly received in 2003--this publication called it "their best yet"--and a decade on it stands as the band's high water mark (though 2001's The Photo Album remains criminally underrated)...

As Death Cab for Cutie's Transatlanticism turns 10, a certain chunk of young adults--maybe professionals, some still managing to avoid it at this point--might be having their first startling symptoms of the highly contagious, easily transmitted "Man, I feel old" virus. It's spread for every generation that came before, with Nevermind- or Ten-raised music devotees sick at the thought of 20-year re-issues, or Baby Boomers begrudgingly shelling out the big bucks (because they can afford it...

The term "transatlanticism" was coined by Ben Gibbard to define the incomprehensible emotional gap between two lovers separated by comprehensible distances--the continental United States, an entire ocean, or, most likely, just a couple floors in your freshman dorm. In the 10 years since Death Cab For Cutie released their finest record, the title has taken on an unintended resonance in regards to their career...

Death Cab for Cutie's seventh studio album, "Codes and Keys" (Atlantic), pulses with the sound of tires on pavement, life blurring past a bus window on the road. Tucked inside its shifting scenery is a yearning that nags like a toothache, the desire for some semblance of permanence in an impermanent environment. The word "home" comes up a lot in Ben Gibbard's lyrics...

Sound: You would expect after front-man Ben Gibbard getting married to Hollywood actress Zooey Deschanel and kicking his pension for alcohol, a much more mature and upbeat atmosphere from his latest release "codes and Keys" would materialise. Well, you would be right. After years of somber guitar melodies and down-trodden lyrics from past releases, Death Cab For Cutie attempts to lighten our dark hearts with some feel good happy-core indie-rock tunes...

Sound: I listen to a lot of indie/garage rock, and I still love Death Cab. The new Plans CD is very good, everything is very nicely put together and the sound sounds very professional for a independent record label. A lot of romantic/love bands today have a lot of just piano and acoustic guitar, and light drums, but Death Cab keeps there music mellow and depressing but with all the normal band instruments including: two guitars, bass, drums, keyboard...

Sound: Death Cab For Cutie's quirky new release Narrow Stairs has been receiving quite a bit of buzz, and this is one case where it's justly received. The band has the amazing ability to create songs that sound both melancholy and lighthearted in the same moment, resulting in quite a perplexing experience. There's a variety of styles that DCFC dabbles in on Narrow Stairs, and the band hits it's peak when they put an emphasis on a more cinematic, ambient sound...

Sound: Call it what you will "yuppie indie," "emo" or "garage rock" but the special thing about Death Cab is that they switch between all of them. One song can be in your face electric guitars slamming, the next be a chilled out acoustic piece. This is what gives Death Cab the diversity. Plus Ben Gibbard's voice is just so melodic and touching it can give you shivers down your spine...

Sound: Well it starts off with "The New Year" and the sound is very vast and has some serious reverb. The tone of the music goes up and down throughout the album. They have some serious musical skill going on all through every song. The music can be depressing and elating at the same time, it's an abstract medium. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics were great but each song needs explanation. 01. The New Year - this song is a great starter, probably the best album starter I have ever heard...
