Release Date: May 14, 2013 To my knowledge, it seems that there are very few modern bands these days who can come anywhere close to matching the unfaltering consistency of The Dillinger Escape Plan's back catalogue--that is to say, there aren't many current bands that have been releasing music for over ten years, and among that already impressively small number, there are even less bands that have actually put out ten years' worth of good music...

"'One of Us is the Killer' is a monumental battlefield for the band's warring personalities." The Dillinger Escape Plan. For most heavy music observers the band's name alone conjures their distinct and volatile cacophony. The sixteen years since their formation have seen their complex and caffeinated brand of mathcore grow from obscurity to ubiquity. In 1999 the band released the genre-defining "Calculating Infinity...

Over the years, fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan have come to expect a little something different with each new album. Though they almost certainly ran the risk of alienating large sections of their large fanbase with each new direction they embarked upon, it has always been an admirable quality. Here is a group that, among the dozens of generic wannabe bands within the metalcore scene, has always dared to think outside the box and challenge the pre-conceived notions of what their music could...

If you're looking for a new metal album that does exactly what it's meant to do, The Dillinger Escape Plan's (DEP) latest release One of Us Is the Killer is definitely for you. With their unique blend of technical mathcore and chaotic riffs, this release shows off a lot of sounds the four piece band has been playing with...

While they're still more than capable of generating a sonic mass of technical chaos, it seems that these days the Dillinger Escape Plan are most comfortable and confident exploring more melodic pastures. On One of Us is the Killer, their fifth full-length and first for Sumerian Records, even the heaviest tracks-such as opening salvo "Prancer" and the furiously spastic "Hero of the Soviet Union"-break away into more traditional rock sounds midway through...

Woe betide the genre named after the worst kind of homework. "Mathcore" elicits as many cringes as it does exaltations from those in the know. An outer layer of maths let alone a core would send most scurrying away fast as legs can carry them. The Dillinger Escape Plan (DEP) is the band for which the title is "derived" and on this, their fifth record sees DEP's evolution best served by a step back from total chaos...

With 2007's Ire Works, 2010's Option Paralysis, and now 2013's One Of Us Is The Killer, New Jersey mathcore band The Dillinger Escape Plan have become one of the most consistently satisfying bands making music today. One Of Us Is The Killer is typical stellar Dillinger Escape Plan, which is very much a good thing; the record's punishing screams, complex drum beats and overall explosive urgency give you exactly what you want in a Dillinger Escape Plan record...

There's an odd little moment during One of Us Is the Killer, not long into the title track, when Billy Rymer's drums seem to get away from him for a second. This is, of course, deliberate design, the apparent flub actually a brilliant jazz-like move, one that gains power as it recurs. Rymer's trickery is but one of several twists on a track that sadly proves the exception and not the rule...
