Dokken Reviews

Don Dokken has always managed to surround himself with a lot of talent. The resume of guitar player's for Dokken speaks for itself from George Lynch, Reb Beach, Alex de Rosso to John Norum and Jon Levin. But what has seemed missing from the Dokken camp over the past few years in live performances I have witnessed is the vocal deterioration of Don himself...

I can be short about this one. "Broken Bones" is Dokken's 11th and hopefully last studio album. Colleague KVK wasn't that keen on their last album "Lightning Strikes Again", complaining about Don Dokken's voice and the quality of the songs. Although I was once a fan of this band, I can now only express my disenchantment about "Broken Bones"...

With their eleventh album, Broken Bones it appears band namesake and vocalist Don Dokken has accepted that he's getting older, but also wiser (hopefully) and milder. Broken Bones is a hard rock album wrapped up in some melancholy and seasoned maturity. Dokken sings on Burning Tears, "leave the past behind, and all those wasted years.' Is he trying to tell us something? Dokken: well, only one guy is really Don Dokken...

Sound: Dokken had a huge amount of success in the 80s become one of the the biggest bands of the 80s hair metal movement. In 1987 the band released their 4th album "Back For The Attack" their most successful album to date charting #13 on the US album charts...

While the sleazier end of the 80s metal spectrum (Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses et al) has had a resurgence of popularity in recent times, less outrageous bands such as Dokken - who did as much to define the period's hard rock sound - have so far proved less revival-worthy. This no-frills set gives listeners a chance to reappraise the band's career, from 1983's Breaking The Chains up to the classic line-up's live 1988 swansong Beast From The East...

Dokken comes back after a four year absence with 'Lightning Strikes Again,' coincidently named after a song on their 'Under Lock And Key' album. George Lynch has come and gone twice and John Levin (Doro) has been performing the guitar work with flair and acumen since 2004. The question for me is how is Mr. Dokken fairing these days? Well, I'd say his is voice generally strong but growing a little rougher with age. And then what about this album...

If this Los Angeles band hadn't been associated with '80s hair metal (ironic considering most of these guys are balder than a baby's ass), the new Dokken album could actually pass for the kind of hard rock that's on the radio right now. But it was, indeed, 20 years ago that people began rokken with Dokken (their debut was Breaking the Chains)...

The end times are near, all around us if you look you'll see the signs. War pits brother against brother, plague and famine stalk the land and now titans of '80s rock Dokken are back with a new album of wonderfully overblown pomp rock, trailing an ozone destroying cloud of hairspray in their wake...

Sound: Dokken had achieved moderate success with their second album "Tooth & Nail" which featured a few radio hits in the early '80s. This was the bands third trial and it was a charm. Under Lock & Key ultimately became the bands highest selling album and a piece of classic metal. The album is 21 years old and still a listenable album. Don Dokken's anthemic choruses matched with guitar virtuoso George Lynch's chainsaw guitar sound...
