Eddie Vedder Reviews

"I'll be sleeping by myself tonight," sings Eddie Vedder on Ukulele Songs, his reflective, minimal new solo album. It's a touching moment for a guy who spends most of his waking hours growling, screaming, and snarling as frontman for Pearl Jam, America's long-running kings of anthemic classic rock. But 16 tracks full of touching moments, played by a lonesome Vedder on the ukulele--with nary a guitar to speak of--has the potential to be a quietly awkward disaster of the highest proportions...

Sound: Pearl Jam fans are like addicts. They need a new fix on a regular basis. Fortunately, the band has been very good to them, releasing eight studio albums, double-disc rarities and greatest hits collections, and more than 100 live albums in their 16-year career. This output has been more than enough to satisfy these die-hard fans, even if the abundance of recordings has decreased their popularity with the general public through the years...

Sound: Ukulele Songs has 16 tracks, and the entire album is under 35 minutes long. This is Eddie Vedder's second full-length solo album. The longest track is "Without You" at 3 minutes and 19 seconds. The shortest track is "Hey Fahkah" at 9 seconds and consists of Eddie Vedder messing up on the ukulele, then laughing and saying "fahkah" a couple of times. There is also a 37 second instrumental track called "Waving Palms"...

Monkeywrench Presenting Eddie Vedder alone with only his voice and ukulele, Ukulele Songs is essentially a love letter to the much-maligned instrument. The intimate production of these sessions helps the album come off as a series of relaxed, creative flashes that mix originals and covers. Vedder finds inspiration from Hawaii and pre-World War II numbers, and his duet with Chan Marshall on "Tonight You Belong to Me" even sounds like a lost moment from the 1930s...

With his solo debut Into the Wild, Eddie Vedder painted vivid pictures of Alaskan wilderness; his powerful vocals, delicate guitar work, and congregation of backing singers and orchestration fusing into a more than satisfactory soundtrack for the 2007 film. Although many expected more from the Pearl Jam front man, Into the Wild was the pleasant and solid record that Vedder needed to cultivate to get his solo career on the right foot...

Eddie Vedder is an old, old friend of mine. And when you've known someone for too long, it becomes hard to find faults in that person, since that familiarity and sense of comfort allows you to overlook mistakes, even if those mistakes come packaged in CD cases with the word "Binaural" plastered on the cover. With the imaginatively-titled Ukulele Songs though, there's no need for any protective glossing over about the quality of the album...

Eddie Vedder's first solo album, which doubled as the soundtrack to Sean Penn's Into the Wild, already went for a folksy, acoustic sound. It still comes as something of a surprise to find the Pearl Jam frontman coming out with a collection of songs played on a ukulele which he "picked up during a beer run in Hawaii nearly 15 years ago...

Eddie Vedder Ukulele Songs (Island/Universal) In an interview with TheVine last year, Amanda Palmer said of the ukulele: "It's kind of a magical-trick instrument, because it's so easy to play but it's so incredibly charming. Just the sound of it makes people smile." Which may or may not be something Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder subscribes to, but here he comes with an entire album based on the plucky instrument--his first ever stand alone solo album under his own name...

Since the members of Pearl Jam have released solo albums and side projects, it was just a matter of time before its frontman, Eddie Vedder, went out on his own, too--which he did in 2007 for the soundtrack to Into the Wild...
