M.C. A shaggy, rambling lovability defines Eric Lindell, a California-to-Louisiana singer and guitarist initially promoted as a blues artist. At times, particularly on the first of these two discs (both originally self-released as separate albums)--with regular trio mates Myles Weeks on upright bass and Will McMains on drums--Lindell's throaty, soulful vocals and laidback acoustic grooves recall the likes of G. Love & Special Sauce and JJ Grey...

This one's full of surprises. First of all, it's surprising to see New Orleans' Eric Lindell on the same Chicago blues label that brought us Hound Dog Taylor, Albert Collins, Son Seals and Koko Taylor. Secondly, out of the blue, this is one of the best contemporary CDs to come out of New Orleans in a long time. Unfortunately, Lindell might provide a headache for music store catalogers — where do you file this CD? (Good thing stores around here have a New Orleans section...

This release picks up where 2006's Change in the Weather left off, a point at which most listeners would agree is a pretty good place to start. Recorded at Piety Street Studio, there's a definitely a New Orleans funk feel about Low on Cash, Rich in Love. In fact, the title track sounds like it could have been lifted from an early '70s Meters LP. Ibid "Mind Your Business," which sports a back-in-the-alley groove and a really catchy turn around...

Gulf Coast Highway captures Eric Lindell in top form. While Change in the Weather (2006) revealed the essence of this diamond-in-the-rough, and Low on Cash, Rich in Love (2008) showcased his sizzling melodies and soulful croon, it's on Highway that Lindell steps into his own and finds the ideal balance for his down-home pop sensibilities. Steeped in vintage R&B and urban soul, Gulf Coast Highway blends the spark of Eddie Floyd with the grit of Earl King...

It won't take long -- maybe 30 seconds into the opening bluesy soul ballad -- to realize that Eric Lindell's sophomore Alligator release is a far cry from the typical "house-rocking" blues synonymous with the label's success. Alligator understands that reaching outside of the blues to stay vital is essential for survival and Lindell is a perfect candidate to accomplish that...

Although he was not born in Louisiana, Eric Lindell follows Marc Broussard's career path as a young and soulful guitar-slinging upstart with his heart in the R&B; of the '60s and his soul in New Orleans. This pastiche of an album released in 2006 collects and remasters the audio for music that has been previously available on tiny, poorly distributed local imprints...
