Frank Foster Well Water Piadrum 2006 Frank Foster Manhattan Fever Blue Note 2007 Well Water?Frank Foster leading an exciting 20-piece big band?was recorded in 1977 and never released, the master tapes considered lost until discovered in the home of Don Hunerberg, the session's original engineer. The opener, Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring , features tight unison sax/flute work, setting the tone for an album which captures the joy of musicians inspired together...

The self-congratulating jazz departments of US major labels past and present should be pilloried for letting Frank Foster go a quarter of a century without leading a record date, not to mention never giving him a quartet date. Thankfully, there are civic minded independent labels like Arabesque who pick up the slack and, in producing albums like Foster's Leo Rising, give the party line about celebrating America's jazz heritage at least an iota of credibility...

This 1966 session lives up to its title, offering the strong, comfortable appeal of a solid Lee Morgan record. Soul Outing was Foster's second Prestige record after concluding an 11-year stint in the Count Basie band in 1964 (the first, Fearless, was also recently issued on CD). Although he'd developed a reputation as an ace arranger, Foster spotlights his own warm, muscular tenor soulfulness here...

Tenor saxophonist Frank Foster deserves credit for exploring advanced jazz during his 22 years (1965-87) between stints with the Count Basie Orchestra, rather than just playing in swing revival groups. In the 1970s, he often headed a big band called "The Loud Minority...

Frank Foster has been largely defined in jazz circles by his long association with Count Basie (Foster was with Basie from 1953 until 1964 and led the orchestra for nine years following Basie's death), but the tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger led his own recording session as early as 1954 when he cut a 10" LP for Alfred Lion's Blue Note Records. He returned to Blue Note in 1968 and recorded Manhattan Fever, and material for yet another album was cut at a session held later in 1969...

This CD reissue from 1998 brings back tenor saxophonist Frank Foster's second date as a leader after leaving Count Basie's Orchestra in 1964 after an 11-year stint. Foster, who would become more influenced by John Coltrane as time passed, is heard playing five fairly modern tunes: three of his originals and two songs from the musical Golden Boy...
