Ghost Reviews

If you want to be generous, the new album from Vancouver rapper Ghost has something of a message of motivation most explicitly revealed through a sampled monologue on "Interlude": "The difference between the haves and the have-nots is the motivation to have." Work hard and you can achieve your dreams. Too bad Ghost's dream appears to be rapping about generic rap topics (weed, fashion and bitches, mostly) over generic street rap beats...

On the front of dinosaur metal act Ghost's first covers EP, If You Have Ghost, stands Papa Emeritus. His eyes are fierce and bulging. It looks like he's awaiting his cue in a Pythonesque Gilliam-toon. A gigantic pink foot could crush him any second. You can almost hear murmurs centring from a huddle of Nameless Ghouls: "And now, for something completely different...

Ghost, or Ghost B.C. as they're known here in the states for silly legal reasons, are one of those bands that comes around and has so much mystery and intrigue behind them that a natural hype train begins to chug-a-lug behind the scenes. It's rare that musicianship matches the mystery, but Ghost has somehow managed to pull it off. Their last album Opus Eponymous was one of the best releases of 2010 because of its minimalist charm and classic rock heresy...

Sound: "Opus Eponymous" is the first album by Ghost, released on October 18, 2010. What you can hear here is heavy, doomy riffs in contrast with softer parts and choruses ruled by keyboards, all of this to create an amazing, sometimes dark atmosphere. It sounds like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple had a baby, and it kinda sounds like Blue Öyster Cult too. Some people also compare them with Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, mostly because of their theatral live performances...

I was raised Catholic. My family went to mass every Sunday and I'll never forget all the standing, sitting and kneeling on stiff, wooden pews. The air would be choked with the smog of burning incense as the ornately dressed priest, his back to the congregation, recited the dead language of Latin from a thick tome placed at the altar...

Satan-happy Swedes led by demon pope the Ghoul with No Name debut a delicate masterwork. The opening church recital turns into an organ-broiled power chord and bass pile driver with Catholic school harmonies, some demon seed of late-1960s swinging London: Syd Barrett leading members of Deep Purple and the Zombies. Psych-pop jewel "Ritual" imagines a Summer of Love Def Leppard, while "Stand by Him" and its monastic chorus ("It's the night of the witch") would've been the follow-up hit.

"Is Ghost's 'The Engraving' a particularly riveting or original record? Hardly. That said, if you're looking for '80s-style rock bombast, it might be good for a few spins." On one hand, Ghost's "The Engraving" is well-played and guaranteed to appeal to those looking to crank up some '80s-style classic metal. On the other, the songwriting heads into by-the-numbers territory a bit too frequently, resulting in a disc that's not likely to haunt your stereo for too long...

Now we've got the import vinyl of this hot occult item, hail Satan...

Whether it's Satanic screeds or Christian proselytizing, there are plenty of extreme opinions in metal, but some people deeply devoted to either viewpoint often fail to realize just how overbearing both sides can be. While Christian metal tends to be a bit of a whipping boy in the metal world, many people finding bands' fundamentalist roots very off-putting, the Anti-Christian or Satanic bands don't do themselves any favors either...
