Helloween Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Recognised as one of the true kings of power metal (though, in reality, their output often veers into somewhat heavier speed metal territories), Helloween have not only been responsible for inspiring a whole generation of younger acts (Hammerfall, Dragonforce) but also managed to remain impressively relevant, helped in no small part by their releasing a series of successful albums in recent years...

German power metal band Helloween follow-up 2010's 7 Sinners with their 14th studio album, 2013's Straight Out of Hell. Helloween, born out of the 80s, is comprises members Andi Deris (vocals), Michael Weikath (guitar), Sasha Gerstner (guitar), Markus Grosskopf (bass), and Dani Löble (drums). Helloween show their professional musical seasoning throughout the 60-minute duration of Straight Out of Hell. More often than not, the set is both consistent and enjoyable...

"'7 Sinners' was a tough album to beat, but 'Straight Out Of Hell' is a worthy follow-up in all the right ways." For a career pushing thirty years, Helloween's is noteworthy for many reasons, but chief among them is the band's extended, skyrocketing rebound from a dreadful artistic (and commercial) slump in the early '90s...

Sound: Helloween in their later days have become experts at combining the symphonic sounds of power metal with the more modern sounds of thrash and heavier metal. The boys form Germany once again prove their prowess of music is legit with the Dark Ride. They continue their tradition of having an intro track with Beyond the Portal which breaks (although not loudly) into Mr. Torture, one of the band's best songs to date...

Sound: This is possibly the greatest album ever! The sound is amazing! The harmony guitars work great together. Kai Hansen is a genius. Michael Kiske is one of the greatst singers you will ever hear! He's kind of a cross between Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and Geoff Tate of Queensryche (Not a fan of their music, but Tate is a good singer). Ingo Schwitchenburg is one of the greatest drummers ever and he does a great job on this album (R.I.P.) and Markus Grosskopf is a great bassist too...

Sound: Ok, let's be honest here, since mastermind Kai Hansen and selfish out-of-this-world-voicalist Michael Kiske left the band, Helloween have been falling from an endless cliff without salvation in sight for about 15 years. Though they have released some great Power Metal tracks like "Kids Of The Century", "Sole Survivor", "Wake Up The Mountain" and a bunch more, most people never thought of them as metal gods or anything near that...

Summary: Power metal that is actually pretty rad. In 2010, no less! If Helloween concerned listeners by celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary with a very distinctly un-metal compilation (that is, an acoustic/symphonic reinterpretation of their classic songs), then 7 Sinners should at least redeem the group in the eyes of even their ficklest listeners. And not just because it features a song titled "Are You Metal...

Why do so many metal bands think they're doing their fans a service by re-recording their greatest hits instead of putting out a tidy best-of compilation? Fans hate such stunts. Metal aficionados can be the most discerning listeners this side of jazz, clinging dearly to their favorite bands' old material, and if anyone dared to mess with the originals, there would be hell to pay...

Sound: Amazon.com WidgetsSimilar to fine wine, most artists tend to be better with age. The reason is virtually unknown but one could attribute it to the fact musicians want to conquer their previous material, pushing forth the loudest most raw/aggressive work to date. 7 Sinners is solid proof. The name Helloween is tarnished with 26 years and 15 studio releases reeking of speed metal, but the German group are no slouches...
