It was night and day. The club was quiet, then Hypnotic Brass Ensemble took the stage, and nearly everyone in the room rushed to the floor. Five minutes later, the venue was full. The vibe was hype; there was so much potential. This was night two for the Chicago-based eight-piece, and apparently word of mouth was on their side. People came ready to party. The audience chanted along to their aptly named 2011 song, "Party Started." The crowd was open to suggestion -- perhaps too open...

Five re-workings recorded late last year in Dublin -- hypno-tized hip-hop, indie dance pop and Afrobeat -- for the new Choice Cuts imprint. From Jay Z -- the Kingdom Come overture -- to Fela, via an Art Of Noise (Moments In Love), an Outkast (from Aquemini), and a Madlib & MF Doom, scored for the Hypnotics by Mos Def.

Some are born to greatness, some have it thrust upon them. And sometime the two are one; just ask the seven or eight horn-wielding siblings who, with a non-blood brother, comprise the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. They were born the sons of Kelan Phil Cohran, a multi-instrumentalist and bandleader who worked with Sun Ra, led the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, and schooled Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire in the mysteries of the kalimba...

You don't see too many street music ensembles with this kind of pedigree. This Chicago-based 9 piece jazz group, who have spent years touring and honing their craft on street corners worldwide, at least when they're not backing Erykah Badu on a song or opening for the recently reunited Blur at Hyde Park, also features eight sons (from two different mothers) of legendary Chicago trumpeter and A.A.C.M. co-founder Philip Cohran on horns! 2 trombones, 4 trumpets, one sousaphone and a euphonium...

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is comprised of 8 brothers from the south side of Chicago, all sons of the Sun Ra trumpeter, Phil Cohran. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is Chicago's brass band, deeply rooted in the spirit of cosmic music. Here are two scorchers from their Honest Jon's full-length. "Alyo" (with Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums) is hard and funky, written by Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company...

The dictionary defines "hypnotic" as sounds or movements that are very regular and make you feel as if you want to sleep. Bearing this in mind you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble should be reserved for chilled out late nights and unwinding to sunsets. Little could be further from the truth; this is a supremely funky collection of instrumental tracks for you to unashamedly shake your ass to. Hypnotic it ain't...
