The familiar face, the trademark hair, the blood red lips, the steely glare, the black leather jacket. This can only Imelda May, this is her new album Tribal and she means business. Showing no signs of mellowing with motherhood, the London-based Liberties Belle, loved for her unabashed association with rockabilly arguably indulges her love of good old rock 'n' roll on this album more than previous releases. On many of these songs it definitely goes up to 11...

Unashamedly anachronistic, Ireland's rockabilly queen lets her fourth album pick up where her breakthrough third album, Mayhem, left off in 2010. Or, if you prefer, where Eddie Cochran left off half a century earlier. Aside from a passing reference to eBay on Round the Bend, (and perhaps the novelty of a woman singing this sort of material) there's little here that would surprise a 1960 rock'n'roller...

Rockabilly, burlesque and street-corner sassiness ... Imelda May. Photograph: Barry Mc Call Buy it from Buy the CDDownload as MP3Imelda MayTribalDecca (UMO)2014 Dubliner Imelda May has done handsomely out of planting herself at the junction where rockabilly, burlesque and street-corner sassiness meet, and her fourth album doesn't tinker with the recipe...

Winner of best newcomer at the Irish Music Awards and with adoring words already from Jeff Beck and Jools Holland, you'd be forgiven for expecting big things from Imelda May's debut album. And things do get off to an explosive start on the appropriately named 'Johnny Got A Boom Boom' - an upbeat jazz romp that knows the merits of a toe-tapping bassline. May's vocals, too, become enlivened on an energetic chorus that offers up a 'boom boom' to match Johnny's...

Ireland's Imelda May made waves with her 2011 album Mayhem, which was well received by both critics and listeners. The follow-up release More Mayhem provides more of the same: a well-produced, solidly performed mix of rockabilly, garage rock, surf guitar licks, sultry torch songs and whatever else that gets pulled into May's considerable gravitational well...

Last year we described Imelda May's Mayhem as "ridiculously accomplished", and that's still true now the album of slick, catchy rockabilly has been reissued with a handful of bonus tracks. Two of them are recent singles - 'Roadrunner' and her collaboration with Blue Jay Gonzales, 'Inside Out'.Elsewhere, her cover of Patsy Cline's seminal 'Walking After Midnight' is a cheeky, light affair...

Imelda May Mayhem (Decca, 2011) It's easy to see why the people of England and Ireland fell under the spell of Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, and Elvis back in the day, especially with 20/20 hindsight. The overly contained and highly proper Brits and the dour Irish must have found the gyrations of the first generation rockabilly cats impossible to comprehend. They were like people from another planet--snarling, sneering, sexual outlaws who would do anything to make an impression on their audience...

In the two years since the release of the multi-platinum album Love Tattoo Imelda May has sung at the Grammys, appeared at Glastonbury and answered thousands of questions about growing up in the Liberties. The inner city life theme seemed to dominate most interviews but with the hugely positive international response, it looks like Imelda can think beyond the Liberties these days. On Mayhem, her confidence is clear from the opening track, 'Pulling the Rug', which has a bright yet laid back buzz...
