Jessie J Reviews

Jessie J is the UK version of Katy Perry. Or Katy Perry is the U.S. version of Jessie J. However you want to say it, that's been the typical line on the European singer who struck gold with her debut set, 2011's Who You Are. In addition to spawning the stateside hit "Domino", Who You Are also became the first album by a British female artist to produce six Top 10 singles on the UK charts ... ever. As in, forever, ever. As in, that had never been done before...

The big-lunged, anthemic pop of Jessie J's 2011 debut, Who You Are, led to global success and an appearance at the Olympics closing ceremony. The follow-up finds her in undeniably fine voice again, but without such memorable material. Guest star Dizzee Rascal steals her thunder on Wild, while It's My Party is perky enough, but so formulaic it could be from an A-level chemistry paper. It's by no means a bad record, although the ballads are best avoided...

Photo: Press The second studio album by Jessie J certainly showcases her singing talent, but while Alive is a mix of good tracks and powerful lyrics - a lot which is too similar to what's been before, or even what is plainly out at the moment. While none of the songs match the anthemic statements that lead single 'Wild' had when it stormed to No.1, the album is littered with big but not memorable songs like 'Excuse My Rude' - more akin to' It's my Party', which is badly lacking in personality...

A noticeable -absence of hooks ... Jessie J You can't really blame Jessie J for taking to the internet with the news that she had been in the studio with Pharrell Williams. Williams's stock is currently riding high. He co-wrote and performed on the year's two biggest singles: in the last six months, Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines have sold something like 16m copies between them...

Jessie J is an undeniably talented vocalist but she has these annoying little quirks that can be off putting at times. Top of the list is that unbearable stuttering thing she does, thankfully on her latest track Domino it is nowhere to be seen. Domino is the lead single (and sixth single overall) from the platinum edition of Jessie J's 'Who You Are' album, which was recently named the biggest selling debut album of 2011...

A common criticism levelled at the pop stars of today is that they leave much to be desired in the personality department. British singer Jessie J, however, is afflicted with a dire case of the opposite: too-much-personality disorder. Prior to winning the BBC's Sound Of 2011 poll, the 23-year-old was best known for penning the Miley Cyrus hit Party In The USA, a song that sounds like Penny Lane compared to this crass train wreck of a record...

Yours truly needs to listen to pop radio a little more often. Working as I do as the webmaster of OHHLA, I sometimes get submissions from artists well before I've heard their music, and often before it's even out in stores. Still I've got this nagging feeling that if I had turned on XM 20 on 20 more often, I would have known right away that Jessie J was not a hip-hop artist. Then again considering her biggest single to date is with B.o.B I think I could be given SOME slack on this one...

All the way back in January, Jessie J came out on the top of the pop pile in the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll. In doing so, she trumped artists like James Blake (who came second), Jamie Woon (who came fourth), and Warpaint (who didn't manage to make the illustrious top five). Now, everybody in the world realises that this list is a commercially-motivated excuse for Britain's music critics and industry figures to whip their know-it-all noggins side to side. But they don't always get it right...

This 23-year-old Londoner is being hailed as "the U.K.'s answer to Lady Gaga," which might say more about the U.K.'s desire to answer to Lady Gaga than it does about Jessica Ellen Cornish. She's got a brash, broad voice and a be-yourself message. But Jessie is less show-stealing diva than impersonal pop technician (she co-wrote Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA")...
