Joe Jackson Reviews

Joe Jackson recorded Rain in East Berlin-not a place most of us would go to seek inspiration, but Jackson's never been one to choose a common path. He does, however, have an uncanny ability to touch places we've all tread in his most tortured moments of longing, doubt and sometimes-bitter disillusion...all conveyed in his lyrical search for that most universally desired, and most elusive, of conditions: happiness...

It don?t mean a thing if it ain?t got that swing! Luckily, Joe Jackson?s latest work, a highly ambitious and unusual take on Duke Ellington classics, swings rather nicely, albeit not in a way you might expect. While the album has been out since July last year, it got a second run when it was well and duly promoted alongside Joe Jackson?s ?The Duke Tour? back in October/November...

Joe Jackson may be a few decades removed from the skinny-tie days of "Look Sharp!," but the fire is still there. For "Rain," the singer-songwriter-pianist reunites with his "Sharp" bandmates--bassist Graham Maby and drummer Dave Houghton--in a stripped-down trio format, and the result is perhaps the most engaging album since Jackson's 1980s heyday. It also proves you don't need all the amplification to supply the thunder...

I've been listening to Joe Jackson since he first made his presence felt on the post-punk scene in the late '70's and I have enjoyed all the changes and peaks in his career since then. He has been quiet since the last release in 2003 but now he is back together with two of the original band members ? Graham Maby (Bass/vox) & Dave Houghton (Drums/vox) ? and they sound as though they never left...

Despite the misleading bright yellow "Joe Jackson's Greatest Hits Live" on the CD cover, Two Rainy Nights is not a chronicle of last fall's 25th anniversary tour featuring Jackson's former Look Sharp bandmates, but rather a repackaged 2001 live set that until now was only available through his web site. That being said, the 14-track collection is still worth savouring...

This 1982 ode to NYC is an urban(e) pop classic. No CBGB's grime in evidence here, not much sleaze to speak of, but the cosmopolitan vibe and Jackson's strident piano faithfully evoke the hyperkinetic magic of the Big Apple...

It's impressive how the new wave veteran can flesh out a batch of songs with what seems to be so little. This album uses only Joe Jackson's voice and piano, backed by his long-time bassist and drummer. Fans won't be let down by this latest collection of accomplished and almost too-smart songwriting that borrows from the classic sensibilities of piano-based jazz. Equally impressive is his voice, which seems to welcome with open arms another opportunity for theatrics.

Joe Jackson has earned the right to the nostalgia trip he's been on this decade, having worn many hats in his 30-year career (agitated young new waver, jump-blues bandleader, balladeer, classical composer— not to mention the reggae, Latin and jazz phases), and all of them with some degree of style. So far, the trip has produced pleasant surprises (2000's inspired Night And Day II) and a reunion with the Joe Jackson Band lineup that didn't live up to its punchy, nervy past (2003's Volume 4)...

Duran's debut album from 1981 created the template for the new romantic sound—funk-lite bass, sub-Kraftwerk keyboards, angular guitar and ludicrous lyrics ("fuses pumping live heat twisting out on a wire", anyone?). Now, post-electroclash, Duran Duran feel current, particularly on the storming opening salvo of singles—"Planet Earth", "Careless Memories", "Girls On Film". What Felix Da Housecat could do if he got his hands on these... By 1983's Seven And The Ragged Tiger, the rot had set in...
