John Brown's Body Reviews

Easy Star On Kings And Queens, their first full-length studio album since 2008, reggae octet John Brown's Body nod to a variety of influences. Bandleader Elliot Martin (lead vocals/percussion/programming) sets the tone for most songs with his versatile tenor vocals, which range in style from Matisyahu (circa 2006) to Nick Hexum of the rock-reggae fusion group 311...

Easy Star Records Now this was worth waiting five years for. Hear ye, hear ye: John Brown's Body's new Kings And Queens is the band's best album to date, hands down. There's a vibe of comfort that reigns supreme - not in terms of lack of fire, as the album is loaded with it, but rather an overall gelling of the band's formidable talents. (You thought 2008's Amplify was as good as it gets in JBBworld? Think again...

Easy Star John Brown's Body go for dub on this mostly instrumental EP. Bear in mind that these songs are an approximation of the dub genre instead of actual dubs of their own songs. Throughout the album, most instruments-- drums included--are surrounded by a haze of reverb and delay effects. In "Ring of Berlin," horns and organs sporadically appear, introducing melodic statements while the bass and drums anchor every rhythmic possibility...

Easy Star Records As dub as dub can be, John Brown's Body's JBB In Dub is luscious ear candy for those who want to hear the band's music explored from the inside out. The key to JBB In Dub is the band's decision to let engineer Craig "Dub Fader" Welsch shape the music as he saw fit during the final mix. Welsch (who is also a member of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant) deconstructs, reconstructs, and takes the music to places where the heart and breath are on the outside of the body at times...

On the heels of the tragic death of their longtime bass player, Scott Palmer, John Brown's Body faced even more tough issues. Co-founder/frontman Kevin Kinsella left the band and singer Elliot Martin underwent throat surgery. But you can't stop what's meant to be and Amplify, the band's 5th album, had a destiny all its own. Palmer and Kinsella are blatantly missing from this effort, but Martin and crew (some old and some new) do a decent job at bringing it together...

This Ithaca-based, Jamaican-informed roots reggae band has been poised to break since 1996's All Time. During the nine years since, they've released record after incredible record alongside a boggling tour schedule. Moving from their Shanachie home base to the creative Easy Star label, Pressure Points certainly hits the mark. While most albums have split time between vocalists Elliot Martin and Kevin Kinsella, Martin takes the lead on nine of the 12 tracks...

Reggae. It's hard to deal with when done poorly, as it becomes droning and repetitive. Done well, however, those repetitive grooves become entrancing, literally. John Brown's Body does a good job of not only keeping my interest, but actually getting me into the music at times. Musically, John Brown's Body is on the edge. Their ample use of samples and drum effects keep the beats fresh, and keep me from feeling this band is a bad Marley clone...
