Jurassic 5 is a six-piece hip-hop crew that was formed in 1993 at the Los Angeles, California venue Good Life. Rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir aka Soup, Mark 7even, and turntable maestros DJ Nu-Mark and DJ Cut Chemist came together from two separate crews, the Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee. Cut Chemist left the band in 2006 to pursue a solo career, however he returned in 2013 when the group "reformed" in order to perform at various concerts. Jurassic 5 Reviews

It's hard to quite gauge the impact Jurassic 5 have had on rap and music in general since they unleashed their sublime eponymous debut in 1998. Their feel-good and almost liberated sounding hip-hop has carved the band a niche in the higher echelons of the music world and has provided a wholesome alternative to the gruesome brutalities of gangster rap...

Jurassic 5 are the Oasis of hip-hop. Luckily for the world's stewardesses, that's not a statement about their intake of intoxicants. Instead, purists complain the West Coast crew lean too heavily on their influences, scavenging old songbooks instead of writing new ones. But given the horrid state of hip-hop - and, until recently, the dismal prospects for guitar rock - is this really a bad thing? J5's retro tip delivers a smooth flow and good beats on their second full-length album...

I have to admit, I was pretty damn excited to get my hands on the highly anticipated Jurassic 5 deluxe re-issue. This exclusive bonus set contains their original release of the Jurassic 5 EP, plus a rare 15 track bonus disc, and a DVD that includes the London date of their first world tour. I had first bought the Jurassic 5 EP some ten years ago; it was part of a whole new alternative hip hop scene that was starting to break through...

The original new school/old school tag team return with their first release in three years and they've brought some famous friends. Stadium filler Dave Matthews supplies the chorus to first single 'Work It Out' while, less unusually, Mos Def appears on the booming 'Where We At', guest producers include Eminem and 50 Cent collaborator Scott Storch and Nas and Fugees producer Salaam Remi...

Jurassic 5, familiar to most because of the outstanding hip-hop anthem Concrete Schoolyard, have returned for their long-awaited third full-length album. It's been three years since their last LP and this is their first excursion since the departure of Cut Chemist. Band member Nu-Mark takes over the bulk of producing duties along with Scott Storch (Eminem, 50 Cent) and Salaam Remi (Fugees). The result is a pleasingly schizophonic mix of old school hip-hop and new school beats...

There will never be anything menacing about a rap quintet that can call Rockapella bosom buddies, and that's fine with this L.A. crew, tagged as "barbershop hip-hop" for their hokey harmonizing and mic-passing styles. For the past decade, J5 have served up progressive, playground-safe rap ? or, more bluntly, bland rants about the old school...

From their humble beginnings in the Los Angeles cafe Good Life to the worldwide recognition of the rap life, Jurassic 5 went from the 90's to the 21st century with a style many said was vintage 1980's. If that description indicates their desire to craft great rhymes, deliver true showmanship in concert, and achieve more together than seperately, then by all means lump them in with Run-D.M.C. and Funky Four + 1 More...

As much as I love the complex rhyme-style that is so in voguenowadays among rappers from both coasts and all points in between, I canstill get my groove on by listening to some old-school hip-hop by thelikes of The Sugarhill Gang and the Funky Four plus One. The rappers fromthe old-school days weren't about using bigger words then the MC next to'em. Nor were they into jamming as many words into one bar as they could...

"If we don't come with some new styles soon, we are all going to burn inhell"This bold statement appeared on the back of the Jurassic EP infine-print Public Enemy-style. Where PE chose to push the politic onthe cover graphics, for J5 it's all about new style. Their 1997 EPcover presented a modified Prism Records jacket in denim blue andold-school mustard flavor. The sound inside paid tribute to an evenolder-school fashion in lyrics, yet looked forward musically...
