Keith Urban Reviews

In the wake of crossover pop/country success for younger acts like Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, it isn't a surprise that Keith Urban would try a little harder to push in a similar direction, by working with pop producers to light a new fuse in his music. It's not surprising, but it does seem misguided, or at least unnecessary. Or perhaps a non-story, not the dramatic shift that the press about the album, Fuse, has described and that Urban seems to think the album is...

It's neck-and-neck between guitar wizards Keith and Brad Paisley for the artist with the year's most adventurous album. Like Brad's Wheelhouse, Fuse travels in exciting sonic territory, meshing Keith's usual blend of pop and country with some R&B vocal touches and even some New Age-y sounds. Though it doesn't tackle socially conscious issues as Brad's did, Keith's is every bit as groundbreaking...

He managed that climb thanks to a gift for improbable boasts -- even he sounded surprised -- that had more impact coming from an outsider than from a star, and their punch carried through to his 2012 debut album, "Based on a T.R.U. Story." But now he's on top, more or less, and the exulting has a different tone on the mixed "B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME" (Def Jam): it feels more tossed off, less thrilling...

"Wish I could take a cab down to the creek/And hang a disco ball from an old oak tree," sings Keith Urban on "Little Bit of Everything," the tweakin'-on-the-tailgate single from his latest album, which tricks out his buff country pop with synth bass, digital stutters and big-box beats. It's hardly news: Urban has been working crossovers since his 1999 solo debut, and even held his own between co-judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on last year's American Idol...

For several years now, I'll admit: my interest in Keith Urban has been waning a bit. After he hit a creative apex with Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing -- with its heavier yet interesting production, and strong lyric choices -- he seemed to kinda of cool off a little. Granted, most of his songs were still a cut above (except the terminally boring "Without You"), but with a few exceptions, he was starting to slip from "excellent" to just "very good...

There are few times when almost the whole collective of songwriters and musicians in Nashville stop and pay attention to a new release to the music market but one of these times is with each and every new release from Keith Urban. While there aren't a whole lot of 'edgy' songs like "Kiss A Girl" on this record, there are plenty of mid-tempo country love songs like "Sweet Thing...
