When a country band has spent four decades pleasing the crowds and climbing the charts, you know better than to expect surprises on its live album. And sure enough, there are no surprises here: no quirky cover versions, no time-wasting patter, no charming flubs, or self-indulgent noodling. The Gatlins are nothing if not pros, and professionalism is what you get in spades on this album...

Occasionally overstated but predominantly satisfying, it's got a little jazz, a little gospel, a little pop, and a little country. Every country fan knows "All the Gold in California," but the best cuts are the controversial "Midnight Choir (Mogen David)" and a sweet little piece of ear candy: "Taking Somebody with Me When I Fall."

Heavy on ballads that effectively show off The Gatlins' trademark genetic harmony. As always, all ten cuts are written by Larry; "Daytime Heroes," a nod to Prince Valium and the soaps, is most inspired. The Gatlin Brothers recorded "Songwriter's Trilogy" live -- whether insightful or self-indulgent depends on the listener's viewpoint.
