Goto commentsLeave a commentShare Hopefully Not The Last Does it count as "throwback metal" if the band was actually there in the 1980s? Probably not, but it's comforting to know that a pack of old dogs (okay, maybe just Bobby Liebling) can still outshine all the young whippersnappers trying to emulate their heroes. Even after 40 years and 6 full-lengths, Pentagram proves that they can still bring the doom with their newest one, Last Rites...

If Gene Simmons had abused substances as he did sex and money, he'd be Bobby Liebling, whose 40th anniversary this year as Pentagram anticipates that same Kiss milestone by a couple years. Considering Liebling took 15 of those summers hatching his Virginia doomsayers' Relentless-ly lo-fi debut bludgeoning, that makes it almost a quarter-century in picking up where 1987 sophomore slump of sorts Day of Reckoning left off...

Formed in 1971 and considered, in retrospect, to be one of the very first doom metal bands, Pentagram were initially highly prolific, churning out a steady stream of demos, rehearsal tapes and singles throughout the 70s...

This is rock, man! One of the main forefathers of doom are back and, standing out amongst them, the everlasting and controversial Bobby Liebling, the founder and only constant member; the soul of Pentagram. You probably know Pentagram aren't new in the music business. Even if the band's first and homonimous album didn't see the light until the middle-eighties, the story had begun at the very beginning of the previous decade...

Bobby Liebling has no business being alive. But somehow, after years and years of drug abuse, he's still puttering along, trying to live a cleaner life with a young wife and child, playing shows, and basically trying to eke out some sort of living after practically throwing a good chunk of his life away...

Last Rites? Well yeah, most folks, if they had to bet, probably woulda predicted that wizened Pentagram frontman Bobby Liebling would have been dead by now, of drug abuse if not old age. Certainly not living out a long overdue rock star dream of critical adulation, sold out shows, flashy clothes, and marriage to a shockingly young, stylish wife (with whom he just had a baby)! So the title is ironic, since the dude seems to have an unexpected new lease on life...

Last Rites is a rumbling mass of laidback power, a somewhat surprising pleasure considering Pentagram's four-decade-long rollercoaster ride of a career: much delayed signing, respect without success, revolving line-up, drug addiction and near-death experiences. Rough roads aside, the hype around their latest release is well-earned...

"'Last Rites' is old, bland, and shapeless rock that doesn't deserve to be on the same label as some of modern metal's burly bashers." With the benefit of four decades of hindsight, Pentagram is now considered by metal pundits to be a forefather band for both heavy metal in general and doom metal specifically, along with Black Sabbath, Venom, Saint Vitus, and the like...

Formed in 1971 and regarded as one of the founders of the doom metal movement, Virginia's Pentagram leave only a small discography. They've had more band member changes than albums, and even fewer tours. Pentagram hint at southern rock in those New York grooves smeared with Black Sabbath. Considered "classic" by metal fans, First Daze Here shows the band's gumption: unprocessed, heartfelt and pure...
