This makes me realize what people who don't like hip-hop hear: little computer skronks masquerading as music (this album is 50 per cent digital handclaps) with some guy with a forgettable voice mixing incomprehensible statements with naughty swears. While I appreciate how much he hates crackers (who doesn't hate crackers?), I really don't care about who he fights or fucks in the past/present/future...

Artist: Plies Album: Definition of Reality Label: Atlantic, Big Gates Records, Slip-n-Slide Records I want to believe that Hip Hop/Thug Rap does still exist in it's entirety of unique complex rythms, clever lyrics and a whole bunch of street bad ass attitude. Plies album ? 'Definition of real' , is an acquired taste. With laid back beats and chilled out vocals...

He's as loud as he is proud. He's Florida to the death but loves his "goons" even more, proudly bragging that he singlehandedly added the term to the hip-hop lexicon. The term predates rap usage by at least 90 years though, having become slang for a muscular (and usually dimwitted) gun for hire, backing up any criminal enterprise that pays enough for his/her services...

The cover of Plies new album "Da REAList" was so shiny I almost thought I could hold it up and use it as a mirror for a shave and brushing my teeth. Plies probably couldn't do the latter though since one of the things blinging off the front artwork is his iced out grill, along with at least two or three chains around his neck and an expensive watch on his wrist that seems to have blood all over it. Maybe Plies punched a hater out right before the photo was taken...

On the cover of his sophomore album, Plies is squatting down, drawers showing, wearing a ski mask and a medallion of himself wearing a ski mask bearing the legend "Goon." It's a bizarre photo, equal parts menacing and ridiculous. The photo and the album title both reinforce the point that Plies is trying to make: he may have went gold off of the strength of the baby-making jam "My Shawty," but he is still the realist rapper alive...

Who better to address metaphysics than an autobiographical goon in a ski mask? He knows what reality is. It's giving grief a bad name. It's missing the daddy and dissing the baby mama. It's leaving a hater with a colostomy bag, collecting debts from suckers' wives in the only currency at their command, hiding in the bushes with your goon squad until it's time to empty 200 rounds into the object of your attention. Real hip-hop fans respect Plies for making like a goon...

V.GIFibe calls Plies "The Future of Rap" on its December cover, but the Florida rapper, draped in platinum and a thick glaze of willful dopiness, is more a troubling reflection of the genre's present. Da Realist, his third album in a little more than a year, provides a twisted mirror of the current state of hip-hop, one where the faults are all magnified and the bright spots strangely absent. This is an album that's short on everything but swagger...
