As three new singerstestify, country continues to splinter into different camps. TobyKeith, who has scored a minor hit with "Should've Been a Cowboy,"offers a polished baritone and a predominant Hal Ketchum groove. Buthis album falls apart when it becomes a sampler for everything fromnovelty tunes to ersatz R&B.; John Brannen may look like a California surfer, but he's really aspiritual cousin to Jerry Lee Lewis and Joe Ely, with a tenor asscratchy as a $4 suit...

Shania Twain? Greatest Hits? Oh, the ecstasy! No wait, not ecstasy, it's the other thing. Purgatory. Total and utter purgatory. Shania's Greatest Hits, the first (and, God willing, the last) from the multi-Grammy winning artist (so it says here), is a twenty-one track rollercoaster retrospective of her finest moments. Swoon at the first-dance-at-a-crappy-wedding balladry of You're Still The One. Marvel at the bastardisation of the English language displayed on I'm Gonna Getcha Good...

In which our heroine, the Catherine Zeta Jones of cash-register pop, returns with a triumphant flash of her signature exclamation marks and navel. And this time it's trans-national, baby. Aside from its quota of musical sound effects, Twain's latest incarnation obviously has nothing to do with country. Setting out into the vast unexplored territory separating Garth from Madonna, she and husband-producer-cowriter Mutt Lange glance over at Gwen Stefani and take a few tips from Lange's old charges the Cars before arriving at a new pop formula that's all flirtatious ebullience and lively hooks...

New Nashville's sexually liberated woman--proud, hot, and, especially, male-identified ("[If You're Not in It for Love] I'm Outta Here!" "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is [Anymore]")

Shania Twain is a much better pop singer than country singer. Her early material, placed at the end of this compilation, is pretty average 'new country'. The songs are routine, the production flat. Shania warbles and gabbles as though her mind is elsewhere. On the hits from the multi-platinum Come On Over, Shania and her producer Robert Mutt Lange raise their game. Lange has a vision of perfect pop music: bright, shiny, technology driven, stuffed with hooks...
