Slightly Stoopid Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

After an unbearably disappointing Chronchitis burdened by bland blues, acoustic humdrum and bad hip hop, Slightly Stoopid has returned to what they do best: Lush So-Cal reggae, sunny guitars, and a re-emergence of the ska energy that has been missing on Slightly Stoopid LPs since their 1998 breakthrough, The Longest Barrel Ride...

San Diego jam band Slightly Stoopid might seem an odd choice for us to review, but even the so-called free encyclopedia says on their Wiki page that "the band has also experimented with hip-hop on their more recent albums" and even collaborated with the late great Guru before his passing. It would not be that far of a stretch for the Stoopid dudes to reach out to hip-hop, since their sound already embraces reggae, funk, blues and punk among oher genres...

Sound: Slightly Stoopid's latest studio album, Chronchitis, is a positive step towards a very unique sound for the band. Since the band originated from a punk/reggae background, they've taken their sound and evolved it into something that moves away from a cliche sound and begins to create something very new. The CD is much more "unified" than the others, with most of the songs sounding more similar, which can be both a good and bad thing (I personally find it a good thing)...

Sound: Stoopid's sound is very original. Basically, it is a mix between Bob Marley, The Kottonmouth Kings, and Jack Johnson. The songs range on Everything You Need range from rap, reggae, acoustic rock, to even punk rock. This album defined Slightly Stoopid's unique style, breaking away from the sound that it started with that sounded suspiciously like Sublime. However, the songs are for the most part, very simple and repetitive and can get very old after awhile...

Sound: It might be tempting to lump Ocean Beach's Slightly Stoopid in with a myriad of, for lack of a better description, stoner bands, but you'd be completely missing a key point: this is a group of incredibly creative and capable musicians. Slightly Stoopid was undeniably was given a boost when the late/great Bradley Nowell signed the band to his label, Skunk Records, back in the mid 1990s, and there are several songs that do feel like an extension of Sublime's music...

Sound: Throw away whatever you think of when you think "live." As evidenced by this 2-CD set, Slightly Stoopid is an amazing live band. I would go so far as to say that they're better live than they are in studio. "Winter Tour" is a collection of Stoopid songs from the beginning through "Closer To The Sun." Miles and Kyle are incredibly talented at the guitar and bass, and what's amazing is that they both play both instruments at their shows...

Sound: I've always been a big classic rock fan and never appreciated much of any thing outside of it. That was until I heard sublime. Bradley Nowell sang about things that were so simple yet so deep. Slightly Stoopid was actually signed to skunk because of Bradley Nowell. At first I didn't give slightly stoopid the time of day, I pretty much just assumed they were sublime knock offs or wanna bes...

Sound: This album was recorded live with in only one take, no overdubs. Amazing. The complexity of the sound, even with only two guitars, blows my mind every time I hear it. This CD in particular isn't exactly consistant with the "normal" Stoopid sound. It has a more laid-back feeling, sort of like something you'd listen to on a long road trip. One of my favorite things about the band is how they use the guitar almost as a percussive instrument. Specifically, Sensemilla comes to mind here...
