Slowdive emerged from Reading, eyes at their shoes, and from their first EP captivated with their shimmering, twisting sound, which was at the sweeter end of the shoegazing food chain. Within two years they'd been brutally discarded by the music press, who were rolling out the red carpet and dropping their trousers in favour of Suede and the emergence of Britpop. Thankfully, time has allowed the beauty of Slowdive's music to penetrate a new generation...

Though the aptly named Slowdive doesn't exactly drone, the Britishquintet's deliberately atmospheric ditties would probably sound equally nifty ? and not that different ? at twice their intended speed.Like Ride, Moose, Chapterhouse, Curve, Blur, and Lush, Slowdive is part of a new wave of U.K. bands that cynics gleefully call "shoegazers" ? mainly because, they contend, the groups stare at their feet a lot on stage...

When they glided onto the British charts in 1990, Slowdive inspired awestruck critics to reach for the thesaurus, though the Manic Street Preachers, a group outraged by the Oxford quintet's dreamy blankness, branded them "worse than Hitler." It's hard to see how Slowdive's early, reverb-heavy homages to My Bloody Valentine ignited such passions...

Despite being lumped in with the early 90s shoegazing scene that's inspired the likes of M83, Maps and Serena Maneesh, Slowdive were always a little different to their contemporaries. While Ride and Chapterhouse were wont to immerse their music in an ethereal wall of sound, Slowdive favoured a polite narcotic haze, soothing rather than battering the brain into passive submission...

Sound: To anyone who listens to both Slowdive and Radiohead, it is difficult to believe that that Radiohead's Kid A was not inspired by Slowdive's Pygmalion. This album by Slowdive features a shift from Slowdive's hazy shoegazer dream-pop to a spacious experimental ambient style displaying electronic and minimalist influences...

Sound: While the bulk of 90's shoegaze bands (Lush, Ride, Moose) were sometimes just barely distinguishable from one another, Slowdive's music stood out with the dreamy space rock of Souvlaki and the avant-garde eccentricities of Pygmalion. Their first album, Just for a Day, is much more modest than the two that followed. This is a Slowdive who is just beginning to find it's voice, a Slowdive who has yet to define it's sound...

Sound: As all other shoegazing bands of the '90s, Slowdive were heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine's textured drones. Unlike the others, Slowdive were successful in finding their own voice in a scene of very similar artists. Whereas their debut, "Just For A Day" was much more generic in sound, "Souvlaki" stands out as the band's attainment of a unique identity...

Sometimes I get to review stuff that reminds me just why I wanted to do this job in the first place. At the very end of last year, Sanctuary Records quietly reissued all three albums by legendary shoegazers Slowdive, including the rare Pygmalion, which was fetching upwards of $150 on eBay...

Being a huge Slowdive fan, I've always thought that it got the short end of the stick in regards to the history of the shoegaze scene. Every time I pick up a magazine that has some article about the long defunct "scene that celebrates itself," it never fails to mention how great My Bloody Valentine is (note: MBV's Loveless is my favorite record of all time). Well, no shit. I can't possibly imagine the landscape of rock without Loveless...
