Not being acquainted with Bergen band Taake, or particularly much of a devotee of Norwegian black metal, their new album Noregs Vaapen is a slightly confusing release. Being unaware of their journey to date, the album and its contents initially come over as a striking, but uncontrolled, array of ideas and directions. Further investigation and multiple plays reveal a more distinct purpose and adventure, but there's still an air of unsurity...

Infamous Norwegian black metal band Taake emerge from a cloud of scandal and imprisonment to triumphantly release Noregs Vaapen, their best record to date. Taake is an old Norwegian word for mist or fog. The band belie this name with an incredibly clear, concise artistic vision characterized by icicle-bright guitar work...

"The old-forest, shadowy atmosphere persists, but that won't scare off the Appalachian moon 'shiners from having their biker bon fires." Eighteen years after forming, Taake has stayed true to the group's Norwegian black metal roots. Although not as recognized as Darkthrone, Satyricon and Immortal, Taake is as true in their convictions and style as any of the early '90s Scandinavian bands one will see on an American stage. Underground black metal hoarders know the name well, though...

Summary: Taake's debut is essential for any black metal fan that enjoys a bit of melody. My apologies, but on paper Taake's 1999 debut, Nattestid Ser Porten Vid, is probably going to sound like a typical, generic take on Darkthrone's formula: melodic-tinged Norwegian black metal without any frilly keyboards or female vocalists...

Been out of print for a while, but we managed to snag a few (perhaps it's been repressed, we're not really sure). This is the first album from these grim black metal purists.

Taake is back (baake? no, that would sound like "Bach", and Taake is not Bach... though this IS classically grim, as it were... er, on with the review...). Norwegian black metal mastery on display here, as always from the Taake camp. This, their debut for big ol' Century Media, is their fourth full album, and upholds the fuzzy frosty folky foresty feel of majestic, malefic riffage and rasping we'd always loved about this band...

Second album from these obscure, grim black metallers. While not well-known, we really dug their debut ("Nattestid....") as an extremely well-executed slice of true black metal in the classic tradition, and this disc offers more of Taake's majestic dark-forest hymns. The songwriting operates within genre norms, but with much interest and variety, employing raspy lead vocals, clean choruses, fast parts, slow parts, strong melodies, and diverse instrumentation...

Back in print and available again (in a swank digipak, with bonus live video footage)!! Here's our review of Doedskvad when we reviewed it a couple years back:In a recent show of photography by Peter Beste devoted to Norwegian black metallers, we were happy to see Taake's Doedsjarl Hoest pictured alongside better known musicans from bands like Immortal, Enslaved and Carpathian Forest...
