Tesseract Reviews

The kings of djent are back with a brand new album all the way from sunny England. However, is Tesseract's Polaris a worthy successor to Altered State? I remember watching Kubrick's 2001 for the first time quite a few years back, and it had me floored. The colours, the story, the everything about that movie made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. And there has been very few bands which have given me the same reaction on singlular songs, let along entire albums...

TesseracT Altered StateBy Natalie Zina WalschotsUK-based progressive wizards and djent pioneers TesseracT have gone through a particularly challenging series of line-up changes over the course of their relatively short career. Formed in 2003 as a studio project by guitarist Acle Kahney, TesseracT established a full-line-up by 2007, and while most of that line-up has been static, they've gone through three vocalists during two full-lengths and two EPs (not counting the two vocalists that served...

TesseracT - Altered State Words. Blagh. This album is exceptional. That's all you really need to know. Posted Thursday, 30 May 2013 in , Rating: 9 The beautifully composed second album from British djent-fathers TesseracT is unreal. The atmosphere, the sound, the songwriting (which is perhaps the best of metal's young generation) sets 'Altered State' apart from the rest of its genre. Here, as on the band's 2011 full-length debut, the unrelenting melodies are TesseracT's trump card...

"Not your typical head banging journey, the disc fuses together Meshuggah-esque riffs with a very calm atmosphere and exclusively clean vocals for a ride that's as wild as it is contemplative." Joining that class of band that manages to get a new vocalist with pretty much every release, Tesseract has surprisingly come out stronger for it with top-tier new album, "Altered State...

4/5 Usually, the bigger a prog band's bag of tricks, the more impenetrable the music becomes. So how is it that TesseracT becomes more accessible even as its music grows increasingly ambitious? It's tempting to credit new vocalist Ashe O'Hara, given that his densely layered vocals often define the music's melody and mood, but he's only part of the equation...

Tesseract rebounds from another lead vocalist change to deliver their first full-length album, Altered State. Expectations were high for this band considering the high regard the Perspective EP received, and also getting the Best New Band trophy at 2012's inaugural Progressive Music Awards in London. Fans will not be disappointed with this recording. Tesseract:: somebody's excited. Tesseract is the sort of band, that upon hearing them, seem familiar, liked you've heard this before...

Sound: The sound on this album is definitely a hard one to try and tackle, simply because not much has changed. The absence of electric guitars may turn off some people, but I see the addition of acoustic instruments as a brilliant way to add new life into older material. The atmospheric texture of the group is there, and with newly recruited vocalist Elliot Coleman (Sky Eats Airplane, OMNOM (Of Man Not Of Machine), Zelliack) there is a distinct difference in how the older songs are performed...

Sound: Think to 2003 when 3 guitarists on a forum website had ideas to create a new style of progressive music. From this, 3 bands rose in a new wave of music described only as "djent": Fellsilent, Periphery and TesseracT. During the 7 year gap up till now, only Fellsilent had any success and has since split up. Periphery only released their debut this year and now TesseracT has released this highly anticipated EP, "Concealing Fate"...

Flying the flag for progressive metal in the U.K., TesseracT have garnered a cult following that continues to grow. With Perspective, the five-piece deliver their first acoustic work, having been inspired following the addition of American vocalist Elliot Coleman (Zelliack, ex-Sky Eats Airplane) and an acoustic session they filmed in New York in 2011...
