The Airborne Toxic Event Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:

It isn't entirely clear if Airborne Toxic Event exists as a vehicle for Mikel Jollett to talk about girls or if girls exist for Mikel Jollett to write about them. Either narrative wouldn't tell the whole story of Jollett's band or their ambitious and troubling third LP, Such Hot Blood, but it would begin to narrow the frame a bit...

Sound: The Airborne Toxic Event's sophomore effort "All At Once" stays true to the band's past tendencies, both in its strengths and in its weaknesses. Mikel Jollett continues to shine in his ability to write catchy and intricate songs, but over stimulates the listener with a barrage of out-of-place synthetic melodies. Songs such as "Changing" and "Numb" contain synthetic hooks that would have best been left to a string section...

Sound: The Airborne Toxic Event is a band from Los Angeles, California formed by Mike Jollett in 2006 and incorporates a wide variety of instruments such as violins, keyboards. Its sound is a well crafted and catchy melody; its riffs are also balanced and coordinated and in tempo with the drums giving the sound a not too hard rock sound but soft rock sound...

"Fear is unnatural. Lightning and thunder are unnatural. Pain, death, reality, these are all unnatural. We can't bear these things as they are. We know too much. So we resort to repression, compromise and disguise. This is how we survive the universe. This is the natural language of the species." --Don DeLillo, White Noise Like the man who wrote the novel that inspired their name, the Airborne Toxic Event can seem unforgivably pretentious to some and profoundly poetic to others...

I can't put into words what the first song on this album makes me feel, But I'll try. I feel like everything is just about to happen. The nerves have been replaced with adrenaline. The taste of bile in my mouth has been replaced with a slick coating of concentrated spittle. My clenched fists have relaxed, leaving my once sweaty hands strong and at the ready. My eyes have stopped tearing as if I was riding into the wind but am now focused and aware...

After the release of their debut album in 2008, Californian cool kids, The Airborne Toxic Event, are finally back. Three years on the heels of their self-titled album, All At Once was well worth the wait. While they say never judge a book by its cover, the same rule cannot be applied to All At Once. The cover art suggests the band will be taking on a slightly darker, more sinister tone and the music definitely supports this...

Shocker! The long-awaited (it says here) follow-up to a sublimely average debut is another half-arsed muppet show executed with the charisma of a terminally ill sloth. Singer Mikel groans and splutters like a man performing something my - ahem - mate's last girlfriend dubbed 'thirsty dog cunnilingus'. Then again, this lot probably can't be bothered to engage in that practice, either...

Los Angeles has always been home to many terrific bands, but it seems to be having a particular renaissance at the moment. One of the young bands leading the charge for local SoCal sounds is Los Feliz-based The Airborne Toxic Event. Their 2008 self-titled debut album certainly made a big splash, generating a devoted fan base that includes Carson Daly, Adam Clayton of U2, film director Paul Haggis and Jimmy Delshad, the mayor of Beverly Hills...

No one can do angst-rock quite like Airborne Toxic Event. Sometimes glorious, sometimes a little off-putting, yet always interesting. Second album All At Once has moments of real beauty, with Mikel Jollett's powerful voice reaching stellar heights while the music envelops him, powering him along. Opening song 'All At Once' is a classic example of the sort of jaw-dropping orchestral epics this band can produce; a slowly-building steam that soon erupts into full-blown grandeur...
