They put a forceful stamp on other genres--hip-hop, country, alt-rock, even electronica--and expanded their crossover appeal and directions. Celebrate all that, but then turn on your local album-oriented rock station...

Release Date: August 9, 2011 Toronto goth rockers The Birthday Massacre have quite the back story, no matter what opinions you hold on their music. They were one of the first groups to utilize the amazing potential of the internet to make a name for themselves, focusing on sophisticated, stylish web design and message board promotion as their main source of promotion...

Canadian synthrock band The Birthday Massacre are at it again releasing their 4th album, Pins and Needles. This album continues the melodious dark sounds of the previous album, Walking with Strangers. Fans of the older, more heavier sounds may be disappointed as they won't find that here - but I think this album is a winner. I must admit that I am somewhat of a TBM fan, since the Walking with Strangers album, and I was not disappointed with this album. In fac,t it is so much more...

On paper the female fronted Birthday Massacre seem like a sham; industrial styling's peppered with a plethora of synth and 80's pop sensibilities don't seem like the sultry combination actually evoking from their execution. But it does. Not fifteen seconds into the opening number and the formula this band has perfected is unequivocally understood. Haunting atmospheres are met with a voice which the likes of Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) wish they could embark upon...

Summary: They're not creepy sounding anymore... who cares. The Birthday Massacre isn't a band that could be called complacent. On just their second album they had already created a winning formula that included industrial, new wave and gothic rock, but they weren't done yet. On their third release they managed to improve on just about every aspect of their sound while making it more melodic and catchy at the same time...

If you disregard the distorted guitars, the spooky sound effects, and the unapologetically gothtarded imagery, not much separates the Birthday Massacre from honest-to-gosh bumblegum pop. Although generally typed as goth-industrial, they've always exuded a certain "Debbie Gibson sings the opening theme song from an anime cartoon about vampires" quality — which is way more awesome than being an actual industrial band...

Sound: The sound is like synthpop but with a darker and heavy sound. What I'm impressed with is that the band can create a mood for the listener (happy, sad, etc). The bands live keyboardist, Adm (not a typo), blends the keys to the guitars and drums creating an atmosphere of dark emotions and tradgedy. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: Lyrics are awesome. There are alot of catchy songs on this album like Video Kid and The Dream...
