The Spinners Reviews

It has taken15 years and countless rap-record samples for obstinate discophobeslike me to recognize what true soul fans have always known: that thegreat black vocal groups of the '70s were no less great for using aclichéd dance beat. Hearing the Spinners now in A One of a Kind Love Affair, it's painfully obvioushow incidental a dance beat is to their magnificent delivery ofAmerican pop standards like "Mighty Love," "I'll Be Around," and"Could It Be I'm Falling in Love...

After starting out as a doo-wop ensemble in the 50s, at the beginning of the 70s, The (Detroit) Spinners left Motown unloved and underappreciated. Although they had scored big with the Stevie Wonder-assisted It's a Shame, they were frequently overlooked in favour of the label's other big vocal hitters such as The Temptations. With the divine Phillipé Wynne taking over joint lead vocal duties (with Bobby Smith) from G.C...

Either you can see this three-CD package as a potted history of black American music from doo wop to electro-funk via Motown, Philly and disco—because that's the ground The Spinners cover here—or simply as a showcase for their sublime recordings with Thom Bell, plus a bunch of filler...

Peter Gabriel's career has always been a battle between the head and the heart. He is the egg-headed boffin, one of rock's most intimidating intellectuals who likes to tinker endlessly in the studio and who cloaks his work in artiness. And he's an emotional, impulsive man who knows the value of spontaneity and the importance of following his instincts. When the two are captured in perfectly balanced creative tension, he's capable of breathtakingly taut and powerfully moving music...

Mining the same classical chamberpop as contemporaries Procul Harum, Alex Spyropoulos' and Patrick Campbell-Lyons' charges cut... Simon Simopath in 1967, a science-fiction pantomime a-flutter with silken strings and baroque delicacy. Part Greek myth, part L Ron Hubbard. Even better was follow-up All Of Us, though—with the exception of "Rainbow Chaser"—it failed to ignite a public weaned on less fragile acid fare...

Nothing worked from start to finish on this mid-'80s number, both a commercial and artistic flop. John Edwards couldn't generate any energy or fire, while the usually splendid harmonies were both feeble and often flat, and the production, arrangements, and compositions weren't able to retain any interest.

The Spinners made a bid for renewed stardom on a soul independent when they signed with the revived Volt in 1989. Unfortunately, they also found out quickly that being on Volt didn't mean in the late '80s what it meant in the '60s and '70s. Despite a representative effort, with some excellent harmonizing and fine, soulful leads from John Edwards, they couldn't even get a nibble from urban contemporary radio...

The Spinners' 2nd Time Around (1970) was actually their debut long-player for the short-lived V.I.P. subsidiary of Motown Records. The "Second Time" referred to in the title indicates the quintet's new direction, which was considerably funkier than the group's former R&B; persona. The album likewise marked the final contributions of G.C. Cameron, who himself was the latest in a line of replacements that began when George W. Dixon made way for Edgar "Chico" Edwards in 1961...

Riding high off of a Grammy nod as Producer of the Year for his work on the Spinners 1973 eponymous album, Philly soul mastermind Thom Bell infused their next collection Mighty Love (1974) with the similar mix of lushly scored slow jams and stylish mid-tempo R&B; entries...
