The Stone Foxes Reviews

The latest offering from San Francisco's gritty blues rock quartet is anything but small. It's been almost three years since their sophomore LP, Bears & Bulls, but the band has not been wasting time. Writing and touring constantly, playing everywhere from bars to festivals, The Stone Foxes have built a steady following, testing and tweaking tunes on the road...and this is the result: Small Fires is an approachable, cohesive, and razor sharp rock 'n roll record...

Release Date: Feb. 12, 2013 "Everybody Knows," the lead single from The Stone Foxes' sparkling new album Small Fires has more power and polish than anything else the band has done to date. Fueled by a searing harmonica and a swampy, blues-ridden groove the song is an absolute scorcher and another notch on the band's limitless belt of accolades. Its successor "Ulysses Jones" is a howling hound dog thick with attitude, tenacity and bluster...

Some come from the intermediate brightness of the Silver Age, as Stevie Ray Vaughan, who stands tall in a gold-lined niche beside George Thorogood...

The Stone Foxes have apparently opened for the Black Keys before, which doesn't surprise me in the least. The San Francisco band take many of the same cues as the Keys did early on - fuzzed out blues rock, gritty garage reverb, and plenty of 70?s inspiration - and whirl them into an impressive two track release. I recall being floored by my first listen to the Black Keys...

Remember the first time you realized that Creedence Clearwater Revival were not, in fact, the Louisiana-born, bayou-bred hillbillies that they tried so hard to sound like? Despite their repertoire of Southrn gothic gems--"Bad Moon Rising", "Run Through the Jungle", "Born on the Bayou", "Green River"--the band was a product of San Francisco's lush hippie music scene, and were about as "Southern" as Jethro Tull. San Francisco rockers the Stone Foxes have a few things in common with Creedence...

Release Date: July 6, 2010 One of last year's most unexpected surprises was the debut album from San Francisco's The Stone Foxes. Possessing an uncanny knack for gritty guitar blues circa 1970s Rolling Stones, the disc had the charisma and swagger of The Black Crowes with the sassy snap of The White Stripes. And if that all sounds like hyperbolic praise, one listen to their sophomore follow up Bears and Bulls should change all that...
