Too Short Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

It's not easy to start a Too $hort review at this point without a cliched explanation of his veteran status, an obvious acknowledgment of the size of his album catalogue, and an apology to the feminists reading for his misogynistic lyrics. Even though it's dangerous to make assumptions, I'm going to break the fourth wall here and assume you know who Todd Shaw is, and exactly what he's been about for the last 30 years+...

As both a rap critic and a long-time Todd Shaw advocate, "Still Blowin'" was difficult to listen to. Even though it would not be the first time in his long and illustrious career that Too $hort would be accused of recycling themes and concepts of his prior pimpology, it would arguably be the first time in his career where hip-hop's #1 mack no longer believed his own pimp game. The beats were depressing and the lyrics even moreso...

As Hip-Hop Hall of Fame candidates go, Todd Shaw a/k/a Too $hort is a first ballot, first year inductee. With the release of "Still Blowin'" in 2010 his career now spans four decades - the 80's, the 90's, the 2000's and of course the decade this review is being written in...

While LL Cool J was loudly crowing about how he released his tenth album (even though one of those ten was just a repackaged "Greatest Hits" CD) the legendary Oakland mack Sir Too $hort was quietly releasing album number FOURTEEN. So quietly, in fact, that nobody even bothered to put ads for it in their Sunday flyers or mark it on sale at the record store. As the editor of RapReviews.com, I got more than a few curious and upset e-mails asking, "Why ain't you reviewed that new Too $hort...

The Godfather of Pimpin'. That's the title Too $hort has earnedafter well over a decade in the rap game and a dozen albums underhis belt. For any young cats out there under 16, this means thatTodd Shaw was slangin homemade tapes on the streets of Oaklandback while you were in diapers. Paying dues? Paid 'em. Earningrespect? BEEN earned that. So what's left for the manwho once sardonically quipped of his own name that "Life is Too $hort?""Bitch, how could I make twelve albums...

It's been a few years since Too $hort's last album and while "Pimpin' Incorporated" isn't $hort Dog's latest full length, it does serve to hold Too $hort fans over until "Up All Nite" drops on Jive later this year. From the jewel case packaging "Pimpin' Incorporated" does look like an album, but the cover proclaims it comes with a "Bonus Mix CD...

Let's be straight up about it - numbers mean nothing to Todd Shaw at this point in his career. Number of albums released? More than you can count on both hands. Number of albums sold? So many he could have retired years ago. Number of times he's used the word "bitch" on wax? While "infinite" may not technically be accurate it damn sure feels right. If you're a fan of Too $hort that phrase also applies to taking the shrinkwrap off a new release - it damn sure feels right...

This is a public service announcement. Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, do not purchase Too $hort's latest CD without doing your research first. After doing even cursory research you'll likely find that either you already have all the material contained on this album or you never wanted to purchase the material in the first place. To fully understand what I mean you'll have to know that for at least a decade Too $hort has tried to start a successful record label...

It's not surprising that so many artists would want to work with Too $hort - he is after all a hip-hop legend with over a dozen albums under his belt. On "Chase the Cat" though the difference, especiallycompared to his last album "You Nasty", is the AMOUNT of them. B-Legit, Daz Dillinger, Tha Eastsidaz, E-40, Jazze Phä, MC Breed, Erick Sermon, Scarface, and Trick Daddy - and that's the SHORT list...
