The popular narrative is that grunge (specifically Nirvana's Nevermind) killed off metal in the early '90s. The truth, as it always tends to be, is a little more convoluted. Yes, Nirvana's ascent up the charts toppled the decrepit decadence of hair (né glam) metal. But the truth is that after so much empty, sugary pop, metal was due for a fall anyway. It's the reboot that I'm concerned with. 1993 was chock full o' big grunge releases, but already metal was beginning its resurgence...

Sound: My first impression of the band's sound and the music itself on this album was that the album sounds quite different from Lateralus and 10, 000 Days. It's definitely more "metal" orientated than "prog" orientated...

Sound: Despite being Tool's first release, Opiate, a six-song EP relesed in 1992 is one of the best Tool albums to date. Their sound is much more raw and outgoing their more recent material. This album is the perfect example of their heavy, dark, yet at the same time energetic and melodical sound. They have been classified as metal, yet they seem to be in between genres. The album features two live songs which sound amazing...

Sound: Aenima is tool at their heaviest, and with amazing production. Don't listen to this expecting typical heavy metal, the vocals are amazing, but not very heavy, and you won't find any crazy shred solos. Tool's an alternative/progressive metal band, and have a heavy, almost industrial sound to their music. And Maynard has a very unique voice, one that can't be described, you have to hear it to get it...

Sound: I was really anticipating the fact that musically, this would follow on from Lateralus. I think everyone was. But I was absolutely blown away. Just when I thought it couldn't happen, Tool upped the ante with their musicianship once again. Adam has obviously gone out, worked on some new techniques (the talk-box solo on Jambi comes to mind), and implemented them well within the music. Danny Carey is, well, Danny Carey, you can't fault the man...

Sound: The sound of this album is absolutely incredible. That is about all that needs to be said. The way Justin's bass osund really pops out at you in the opening few lines of The Grudge immediately grasp your attention and harness it to their overwhelming musical aura. I like the way that more sound wavers and flangers and phasers are used in this album as opposed to Aenima and such. All of the band members contribute way more than they owe the world to the making of this album...

"Even the mighty Tool are only human" Tool have become the Dalai Lama of rock, a band so revered by their obsessive fans and critics that each album goes unquestioned. Any drastic changes in the band's sound are considered evolution. When songs reach the 10 minute mark and beyond they are epic, never long winded. If the vocalist is buried under the other instruments in the final mix, it is perceived as the will of Tool and accepted as such...

Upon first listen, you'll be hard pressed to categorize Tool's new album, "10,000 Days." Is it packed with sidewinder epics, another of the band's long-awaited masterpieces, ala 1996's "Aenima"? Or, is it finally Tool's jump-the-shark moment, when the 16-year-old band gorges itself on 11-minute songs with names like "Rosetta Stoned"? The answer: yes. Tool has always been a band that pushed the limits of excess, from song structure and CD artwork, to videos and live performance...

It has been five years since the notoriously media shy and overly mysterious band have pierced our airwaves with new material. After cries that â??Lateralusâ?? was to be their last release for many years and possible in-band-tension rumours as many of the members have broke away temporarily to pursue side projects, it was a relief to hear that Tool would reform and push the envelope farther yet again...
