Merrill Garbus applies some control to the chaos of her sound on her new tUnE-yArDs recording Nikki Nack, an album full of playful charm and sonic surprises. Nate Brenner is again the main collaborator, adding some slinky basslines and co-writing the majority of the album with Garbus.Singles Water Fountain and Wait For A Minute are the immediate, hooked-crammed highlights of an album that offers a greater consistency than 2011's whokill (though there's nothing quite up there with the brilliant...

Find me in the basement of the CMG mansion, where they keep the dreamers, the crackpots, the loose cannons. The believers. I prop my feet up on my desk, worn soles finding space between old coffee cups and scattered Illuminati-truther pamphlets. Maura knocks and walks in without waiting for me to answer--her pantsuit is charcoal or navy, but either way it's a new haircut for a new season, and I wave my partner in from the cocoon of my enormous Jos. A. Bank suit...

Haiti has become something of a mecca for indie musicians recently. 2012's brilliant Reflektor album from Arcade Fire was slow cooked in the Caribbean country's French, African and Taino influences and made all the more tasty for it. A success that tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus has no doubt hoped to emulate with her own visit for the creation of third studio record, Nikki Nack...

In a recent interview with Pitchfork, the ever enigmatic Merrill Garbus revealed that she walked in to a library and came out with a copy of Molly-Ann Leiken's How To Write A Hit Song while creating third album Nikki Knack. For those familiar with her first album Bird-Brains and its successor WHOKILL, you would be left wondering how Ms.Garbus would pull off a chart-topping radio-friendly hit? And indeed, why would she want such a thing...

tUnE-yArDs' Merrill Garbus assembles pop music like a mad scientist exiled from the laboratory and locked in a toy store. On third album Nikki Nack , Garbus (somehow) pushes further into the anti- pop world that she mastered with her 2011 breakthrough W H O K I L L , returning with (somehow) even better results. She applies her trademark playground chant vocals, clickety- clacking junkyard percussion and looped, off-kilter electronic effects to her catchiest, weirdest and boldest songs yet...

Merrill Garbus is the harbinger of so-called "ugly pop." Since we last encountered her tUnE-yArDs project with 2011's universally adored w h o k i l l, Garbus was tutored by a drum master from Haiti, where she ventured to embrace non-Western music. The result is a thoroughly cross-cultural album dripping with soul and iconoclasm. It's fun, too; there are party anthems and a funny spoken-word interlude. But, above all, Nikki Nack is a generational statement if there ever was one.

The first time I heard Merrill Garbus, aka tUnE-yArDs, I was watching the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. I found Gangsta (from 2011?s WHOKILL) by Googling the lyrics, and from that point on I was transfixed by her unpredictability and the unique nature of her music. In any tUnE-yArDs song, there are about a million things going on. Her music and nature is, putting it as simply as possible, otherworldly...

Since the crazy-kooky-cool w h o k i l l was released in 2011, and her subsequent 18 months of relentless touring, Merrill Garbus has taken some time away from music to catch a breath. A trip to Haiti and time spent watching 80s American kids show Pee Wee's Playhouse both apparently influenced the sound of Nikki Nack, Garbus' third album as tUnE-yArDs...

Since the release of w h o k i l l, tUnE-yArDs mastermind Merrill Garbus has spent her time studying syncopated rhythms, taking Haitian dancing and drumming lessons, and visiting Haiti for two weeks, per this Mother Jones interview. The change in sound is immediately apparent. w h o k i l l began proclaiming its American roots; titled My Country, the opening song quotes and then corrupts a patriotic American verse, following "my country 'tis of thee/sweet land of liberty" with "how come I...
