Vanessa Carlton Reviews

Summary: Down the rabbit hole once more. 4 of 4 thought this review was well written A Vanessa Carlton Christmas-themed EP doesn't sound like a very exciting prospect, does it? But unlike the majority of the other excessively vanilla female singer-songwriter acts currently strewn all over the Billboard Hot 100, Carlton has at least demonstrated some artistic initiative and a rare desire for self-reinvention in recent times...

Vanessa Carlton has had quite the uneven run in the music industry. At the age of 22, she was signed to a major label, had the No. 1 song in the country (the completely-inescapable-in-2002 "A Thousand Miles"), and a platinum album, Be Not Nobody, which soared on the strength of meticulously produced, piano-driven pop songs...

Vanessa Carlton is one of those millennial generation artists who got pegged as a certain type of singer-songwriter, inextricably tied to the rise of saccharine power pop. Ever since her breakout hit "A Thousand Miles," she's lived in the shadow (and pressure) of early success...

With "A Thousand Miles'' and its licensing fees likely paying her bills ever since she was too young to drink in the piano bars she used to play, Vanessa Carlton can afford to take her sweet time between albums. Her progress as a recording artist has often seemed slow as a result, but "Rabbits on the Run,'' her fourth full-length album and first since 2007, sees her finally moving away from the shiny pop production and lit-mag smartypantsery that marked her previous work...

Conscious or not, Vanessa Carlton submerged herself in all things British for her fourth album, Rabbits on the Run. She recorded the album with Doves producer Steve Osborne at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in England, and the songs were reportedly inspired by the writings of Stephen Hawking and Richard Adams, whose fantasy novel Watership Down is evoked in the album's title...

Imagine a sun-streaked beach in early evening, awash in late-summer afterglow. At the water's edge stands a young woman, her flushed face and salt-kissed hair showing evidence of a swim or a secret tryst. A boy strides into the far corner of the frame. Is he a stranger? The one she's hoping to see? Somewhere, her parents are sipping pinot grigio; somewhere, a friend is getting into trouble. Music floats on the breeze, the whisper of strings and the soft notes of a piano...

Twenty-seven years old and two albums into an up-and-down career, Vanessa Carlton comes off like a college freshman ? poised, bright and eager ? rather than a mildly bruised person of the world. With lines like "Someday when the stories are told, they'll tell of a love like this," her third disc (coproduced by hitmaker Linda Perry, new-label head/rap impresario Irv Gotti and ex-flame Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind) could make the clingiest of teen couples blush...

She was once a promising ballet student but, finding the pressure "intense" and the competition "extreme", young Vanessa Carlton opted for the sedate, warm and friendly cake-walk of the music industry. Next thing you know, the fresh-faced pianist and singer/songwriter is the hottest new star in America. Voted one of Rolling Stone's artists to watch in 2002, Carlton's single 'A Thousand Miles' tops the Radio Chart and reaches number 5 in the Billboard Hot 100. 'Tis indeed a fairytale come true...
