White Buffalo Reviews

While it's too early to say exactly what songwriter Jake Smith and his band The White Buffalo's legacy will be, it is safe to say that Smith has a keen storytelling ability. With a wise and weary hard-edged voice, he creates believable characters that you deeply care about. On Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways , that character is Joey White, who falls in love, goes to war and returns to find his life in a downward spiral...

Jake Smith goes by the name The White Buffalo, although the animals that his music more closely resembles would be bears or wildcats. In his more acoustic moments, there can be an almost gentle quality to his vocals and music but he can also project a raging ferocity too - sometimes in the same song. On his latest full length, Smith utilizes both his restrained and raucous sides in his most ambitious album to date...

Jake Smith, a.k.a, The White Buffalo, is a genuine storyteller. On the band's second LP, Once Upon a Time in the West, the hard-driving country/rock singer spins tales of men on the edge of society: outlaws, poet-warriors--and the dead. His firebrand live shows have deservedly gained him a loyal following, but his storytelling ability has landed his songs on hit shows, like Sons of Anarchy and Californication...

Unison The White Buffalo, Southern California native Jake Smith--has a husky, thick voice that sounds so comfortably familiar and wise that it may trigger some type of musical deja vu where you somehow think that you have heard this before. Tracks such as "One Lone Night" and "I Am the Light" seem to be what Smith does best: singing sad songs beautifully, as his gravely and poignant voice shines through...

There's hope for eloquent folk/country, and this simple and moody EP is as good an example as you might find. The White Buffalo lineup is mysterious, but after some digging I can report that the lead vocals come from one Jake Smith, and he's backed by Tommy Andrews on bass and you might hear a whisper of Matt Lynott on drums. Smith is in the driver's seat; he lays down an acoustic rhythm and sings while Andrews offers a discreet electric guitar for emphasis at key points...
