It's an auspicious beginning: the stuttering digital exotica of "Planet Dada" is the most thrilling few minutes of tech-noir since Orbital's "The Box", "Trans-Europe Express" remixed by Martin Denny. Elsewhere, as with the recent Kraftwerk album, there's a feeling the passage of time finds former innovators treading water. There are some great titles, of course ("Don Turbulento"; "Bougainville"; "Soul On Ice", in particular, cries out for the peacock strut/purple yearning of Billy Mackenzie)...

Hopped up on futurity and new technology, but still in thrall to making songs with lyrics, the early 1980s were a golden age of synth pop. And few practitioners took to their task with as much perverse glee as Zurich's Yello. Dieter Meier (voice) and Boris Blank (sounds) looked like carefully tailored playboy spivs, and their luxurious sound and philosophy showed a refreshing indifference to Anglophone rock moves. So it is on 1985's Stella...

Yello's '85 hit "Oh Yea" notonly graced soundtracks (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) and commercials,it even made it onto Monday Night Football. Not bad for a zanyfilmmaker (Dieter Meier) and a former truck driver (Boris Blank). Essential Yello is an aptly titled best-of sampler of the Swiss synthduo's stuff since the early '80s. Pumped on racy rhythms (from hotCuban to techno-tango), over-the-top analog sound effects and Meier'skitschily dramatic delivery, it comes off as a madcap mini-musical...

2005 Yello Remaster Series, including 5 bonus tracks. The debut album from Swiss-originating electronic duo of Dieter Meier (ex-Fresh Colour) and Boris Blank. Originally issued by Ralph Records in 1980, this groundbreaking album featuring the huge hit "Bostich" (as recently compiled on Disco (Not Disco) 2 & elsewhere)...

Yello is a gently eccentric but hardly excessive Swiss synthesizer trio whose two previous albums established the group, rather dubiously, as the most accessible act on Ralph Records, a small San Francisco label run by that deeply eccentric synthesizer quartet, the Residents. No surprise, then, that this major-label debut bears Residential residues (the queasy synth lines on "I Love You," the toy-town keyboard sounds on "Heavy Whispers")...

One Second expands the Eurodisco approach of Stella, and while it's considerably less adventurous than Yello's earlier works, it's engaging dance music, highlighted by some clever uses of Latin rhythms and vocal cameos from Billy Mackenzie and Shirley Bassey.

The Swiss act Yello began as an avant-garde electronic trio, releasing two critically acclaimed albums (1980's Solid Pleasure and 1981's Claro Que Si) before scoring major U.S. club success (and MTV exposure) with 1983's more accessible You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess. Following the departure of Carlos Peron, founding members Boris Blank and Dieter Meier toned down the more experimental touches while successfully keeping Yello's quirky danceclub sensibilities intact...
