Release Date: July 22nd 2003 "Nostalgic" records are always the hardest to review. At least that's what I've found in the last five years or so of reviewing. They're so difficult, because how on earth can you take a record that many hold dear and write about it without offending anyone? Well, of course, if the review is positive, that shouldn't be a problem, but even so, it's always a difficult task...

I wouldn't really call this a "review" per se, but instead maybe a personal perspective on this release. I didn't see much of a point in critiquing a new version of a well-known album, so this is what came out. I unfortunately was not paying much attention to punk music before 2003. That's just a fact. I listened to Bruce Springsteen because my dad did and I listened to Backstreet Boys because who didn't in their pre-teen years? Don't judge me...

It's amazing how a simple statement can mean one thing at the time it was said, and then something completely different a year and a half later. There was a moment the other day where my fiancé looked at me and said, "I love you" and I thought back to the first time she ever said those three words. We weren't even dating at the time, and her ambiguity-shrouded expression of endearment left me wondering for too long whether she meant it in a slap-you-on-the-shoulder, "I'm right there with ya'...

2011 saw the triumphant return of Yellowcard with their seventh studio album "When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes", which was greeted with tremendous praise from critics and fans across the world. Fast forward one year, and the kings of a scene that has been long-overdue for a breath of fresh air for many years, are back with "Southern Air"; armed with 10 tracks which include something to please all Yellowcard fans, old and new...

When one thinks of Yellowcard it's easy for these thoughts to pop into your mind: Ocean Avenue, pop punk, violin. So are the boys that brought us amazing pop-punk hits with the use of a violin (which is always unusual in such a genre) such as Ocean Avenue truly back in fine form after their hiatus that ended in 2010. Their latest release, Southern Air would deem so...

Sound: Wow. What an album! The sounds go from rock to pop, summer to winter! 01. In "Awakening", which was the second song I heard in the album, was just a breath of fresh air with the classic YC feel in the rhythm guitar and the wavering sound of the lead guitar to start us out. Then they bring on the heat and crank up the volume emphasized with the drum beats, this is where I play the air drums and rock out. Such a cool song...

For a band as established and celebrated as Yellowcard, the decision to return from a hiatus is a weighty one. It's not as simple as waking up, getting back into the studio, putting out a record and playing a few shows. There is a lot at stake, and the band's legacy is part of those stakes. Putting out a bad or even a mediocre record can tarnish an otherwise sterling career, and this is something the fans consider, too...

Sound: The songs off the album are pretty good considering that they weren't really big when this album came out. I like the way the violin adds more soft melody to the acoustic songs. The sound is pretty much pop-punk but with a softer feel to it. Some of it might make you want to jump up and down, and some might make you want to cry into your pillow. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are pretty much the same as all punk bands (about girls) but there are some little stories in there...

Sound: I got into Yellowcard when they released "Ocean Avenue" and I thought they were just ok. I figured id give them a try angain when I saw their new CD on the shelf. Was I ever blown away. I had heard some good things about it, but I wasn't expecting it to be near as good. They really seem to have matured as far as sound goes. The opening track "Three Flights Up" is an awsome instrumental. They also finally got the violin to perfectly fit with the rest of the band...
